Which days are quietest at US airport security, by TSA's own daily count
TSA screened 642 million people so far in 2026. Tuesdays ran 519,000 lighter than Thursdays, and Saturday came out as the second-quietest day of the week.

Tuesday is the quietest day to pass through a US airport checkpoint, and Saturday is the second quietest. We took TSA’s own published daily throughput — every day of 2026 so far, 260 of them, 642,118,607 people — and averaged it by day of the week. Tuesdays run at 2.16 million travellers. Thursdays run at 2.67 million. That is 518,789 fewer people in the airport on the same route, the same week, for the price of moving your flight by two days.

Why Saturday is the surprise
Because the American flying week is shaped by work, not by weekends. Monday, Thursday and Friday carry the business traffic out and back; Sunday carries everyone home. Saturday sits in the gap, which is why a day most people avoid on the assumption it will be packed is in fact the second-lightest of the week. That reading is ours rather than TSA’s — the agency publishes the counts, not the reasons — but the shape of the data is hard to read any other way.
The practical version: if your trip is flexible by a day, moving off Thursday or Sunday is worth more than any security shortcut you can buy.
What the whole year looks like
2026 has not yet had a three-million-passenger day. The peak so far was Thursday 18 June, at 2,988,204 — eleven thousand short. Thirteen days have passed 2.9 million. The daily average across the year is 2,469,687.
The seasonal swing is bigger than the weekday one. January and February averaged 2,205,376 a day; June and July averaged 2,689,697, a fifth higher. The lightest single day of the year was Sunday 25 January, at 1,313,323 — half a normal Sunday, on a day when the counts collapse nationwide for reasons the throughput table does not record.
The exception you should plan around
At Thanksgiving, the weekday pattern inverts and Sunday becomes the worst day of the year. TSA expected to screen more than 17.8 million people over the 2025 Thanksgiving period, with over 3 million on the Sunday after — which it called one of the busiest travel days in its history.
So the one date to design a Thanksgiving trip around is the return: come back on any day other than that Sunday. The Tuesday and the Saturday are the ordinary-week refuges and they hold up here too. The same logic applies to a long-haul departure — if you are connecting to somewhere like Kathmandu for a 12-day Everest Base Camp trek, the domestic leg is where a bad day costs you the connection, not the international one.
What this means for you
Search Tuesday and Saturday departures first, and only then compare the rest. Treat Thursday, Friday and Sunday as the same crowded tier rather than picking between them. And ignore all of it over Thanksgiving week, when the Sunday after the holiday is reliably the single worst day to be in an American airport.
