The short version
Autumn (September–November) is Nepal's best trekking season — crystal-clear skies, stable weather, and the great festivals of Dashain and Tihar. Guide to autumn conditions, the best treks, and booking tips.
- Autumn (September–November) is the best time to trek in Nepal — crystal-clear post-monsoon skies, stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and the finest mountain views of the year.
- October is the single best month for trekking, with the clearest skies and the year's sharpest views.
- Autumn coincides with Nepal's biggest festivals, Dashain and Tihar — culturally rich, but book transport early.
- The main downside is popularity: book teahouses and Lukla flights well ahead and build buffer days for flight delays.
Nepal's finest trekking season
Autumn — September, October, and November — is the best time to trek in Nepal, full stop. Post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, the weather is stable, temperatures are comfortable, and the country celebrates its greatest festivals. If you can choose any time to trek Nepal, choose autumn. For the full year, see our best time to trek in Nepal guide.
What autumn is like
| Month | Conditions | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| September | Monsoon retreating, clearing mid-to-late month | Brilliant green, washed-clean landscape; quiet trails early |
| October | Crisp, crystal-clear skies, stable weather | The single best month — finest views of the year; peak season |
| November | Clear and stable, slightly cooler | Excellent views; second half of peak season as winter nears |
The festival season
Autumn coincides with Nepal's biggest celebrations — Dashain (late Sep/Oct) and Tihar (Oct/Nov) transform the country with lights, colour, and family reunions. Trekking during these festivals adds a rich cultural dimension, though you should book transport early as Nepalis travel home en masse. (See our Dashain and Tihar festival guides.)
Best treks in autumn
Every trek is at its best in autumn, and the icons shine:
The classic Khumbu trek under the year's clearest skies. See our EBC trek guide.
A high mountain amphitheatre, stunning in stable autumn weather.
High passes reliably open, with crisp panoramas the whole way.
Turquoise glacial lakes and big Everest-region views.
Accessible valley trek close to Kathmandu, lovely in autumn.
Short classic with iconic sunrise mountain panoramas.
Autumn considerations
The main downside is popularity — October in particular is busy on the famous routes (EBC, Annapurna), so trails, teahouses, and Lukla flights are in high demand. Book well ahead, especially accommodation and internal flights. Build buffer days for the Lukla flight bottleneck. Nights at altitude are cold despite the clear days — pack accordingly.
Autumn vs spring
Autumn has the clearest skies and the festivals; spring has rhododendron blooms and climbing-season energy with slightly more haze. Both are excellent — but for sheer clarity and stable weather, autumn is unmatched.
The bottom line
Autumn is the best time to trek Nepal — clear, stable, and culturally rich. Come for October's crystalline skies (the finest views of the year), embrace the festivals, and book early to secure flights and teahouses on the popular routes. It's Nepal trekking at its absolute best.

What is the best month to trek in Nepal in autumn?
October is the single best month — it offers the clearest post-monsoon skies, the most stable weather, and the year's finest mountain views. September and November are also excellent, with September fresher and quieter early on and November slightly cooler.
Should I trek during Dashain and Tihar?
Trekking during Dashain (late Sep/Oct) and Tihar (Oct/Nov) adds a rich cultural dimension with lights, colour, and celebrations. The catch is that Nepalis travel home en masse, so book transport and internal flights well in advance.
