Which permits each Nepal trek needs, and what they cost in total
Most of our 74 published treks need TIMS plus one area permit. The table gives each trek’s flat NPR total, with restricted-area fees listed beside it.

Most of our 74 published treks need the TIMS card plus one area permit, and the area permit is the one that changes the total: NPR 3,000 on Annapurna and Langtang routes, and NPR 6,000 on Everest routes once the Khumbu municipality fee is added. A few treks also need a restricted-area permit with a licensed guide, which is priced per day and sits outside the flat NPR figures. The table below gives each trek's flat total at the foreign-national rate, with restricted and other fees listed beside it.
- TIMS is the card most treks need. It costs NPR 2,000 and is listed on most of our treks.
- The area permit sets the total. ACAP and the Langtang park permit are NPR 3,000 each; the Khumbu route adds NPR 3,000 for the Sagarmatha park and another NPR 3,000 for the municipality.
- Restricted areas cost more and need a guide. Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu, Tsum and the far-east Kanchenjunga route are priced per day and arranged through a registered agency.
- These are foreign-national rates. SAARC and Nepali citizens pay less on several permits.
Which permits does a typical Nepal trek need?
A typical trek needs TIMS plus one area permit, which is the ACAP in Annapurna, a Langtang park permit in Langtang, or the Sagarmatha park permit in the Khumbu. Our permit data lists TIMS at NPR 2,000 on most treks, and an area permit at NPR 3,000. Those two lines make up the NPR 5,000 total on the Annapurna and Langtang routes, which is the most common figure in the table.
What do the Everest treks cost in permits?
Every Everest-region trek in our table is NPR 6,000 in flat permits: NPR 3,000 for the Sagarmatha National Park permit and NPR 3,000 for the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu municipality fee. Our Everest pages describe the same two permits, and TIMS is not listed on them. The Pikey Peak trek is the one exception in this group, because its permit data also lists TIMS, which brings its flat total to NPR 8,000.
Which treks need a restricted-area permit?
Eleven of our treks need a restricted-area permit on top of the flat fees, and each one needs a licensed guide, arranged through a registered agency. Those are the Manaslu circuit (14 and 16 days), the Tsum Valley routes, Nar Phu, the Upper and Lower Dolpo treks, the Upper Mustang treks, the Kanchenjunga base camp trek and the Lumba Sumba pass. The restricted fee is charged per day or per week, so the total depends on how many days you walk inside the area.
Fees are the official rates we list, read on 31 August 2026 and converted at about NPR 133 to the US dollar. Nepali government fees change, and SAARC and Nepali citizens pay different rates. Check the current figures with us before you travel.

How do I get these permits?
Many of our packages include the flat permits, and the restricted-area permits are issued through a registered trekking agency in Kathmandu. You need your passport and passport photos, and the TIMS card and the area permits are checked at checkpoints along the route. If you are arranging a trek yourself, the same permits apply, but the restricted-area permits cannot be obtained independently.
