内容速览

Pokhara is Asia's paragliding capital. Everything you need to know — tandem flight costs, launch sites, best time, safety standards, and which operators to trust in 2026.

Pokhara: Asia's Paragliding Capital

With over 50,000 tandem flights per year, Pokhara is one of the world's top paragliding destinations. The combination of Phewa Lake below, the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massif at eye level, and reliable thermal conditions makes it uniquely spectacular. For most visitors, a tandem paragliding flight is the highlight of their Nepal trip.

Launch Sites

Sarangkot (1,592m)

The main launch site, 30 minutes from Pokhara Lakeside by taxi. Offers the widest panorama including Machhapuchare (Fishtail Peak), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Annapurna I. The standard tandem flight launches from Sarangkot and lands at Phewa Lake's northern shore (Pame). Duration: 25–35 minutes.

Harpan/Begnas Lake

A quieter alternative launch site 15km east of Pokhara. More remote feel, fewer pilots and tourists. Views slightly different — Begnas and Rupa lakes below. Less reliable thermals than Sarangkot but often available when Sarangkot is cloudy.

Types of Flights

  • Tandem scenic flight (25–35 min): Standard tourist experience. Sits in a harness in front of the pilot. No experience needed. NPR 6,000–8,000 ($45–60).
  • Tandem + acrobatics (35–45 min): After the scenic portion, pilot performs wing-overs and spirals. Not for weak stomachs. NPR 8,000–10,000 ($60–75).
  • Thermal/duration flight (1–2 hrs): Experienced pilots can find thermals for extended flight. Cost: NPR 12,000–18,000 ($90–135).
  • Sunrise/golden hour flight: Dawn launch gives extraordinary low-angle Himalayan light. Premium pricing: NPR 9,000–12,000.

Best Time to Paraglide in Pokhara

October–May: Best conditions. October and November are peak months — crisp, clear air, excellent visibility, reliable thermals. March–May excellent for rhododendron views from the air. Winter (December–February) is flyable on clear days but cold at altitude.

June–September (Monsoon): Flying is heavily weather-dependent and often cancelled for days at a time. Not recommended for booking paragliding in monsoon season unless you have flexible timing.

Safety Standards

Nepal's paragliding industry is regulated by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN) and the Paragliding Association of Nepal (PAN). All commercial operators must hold PAN certification. Pilots must have completed minimum training hours and pass annual medical checks.

To verify your operator is legitimate: ask for their PAN membership number and verify it on the PAN website. Ask how long your specific pilot has been flying. Reputable operators have pilots with 5–15+ years of tandem experience in Pokhara's specific conditions.

What Happens on the Day

  1. Meet at Lakeside office for briefing (15 minutes)
  2. Taxi to Sarangkot launch (30 minutes)
  3. Equipment fitting and safety brief from your pilot (10 minutes)
  4. 10–15 minute wait for launch window
  5. 25–35 minute flight
  6. Landing at Phewa Lake shore
  7. Taxi return to Lakeside

Total time from meet to return: approximately 3 hours. Wear layered clothing — it's 5–8°C cooler at Sarangkot altitude even in summer.

Video and Photos

All operators offer GoPro video and photo packages for approximately NPR 1,000–1,500 ($7.50–11) extra. Your pilot attaches a GoPro to their helmet or a stick mount. Strongly recommended — the aerial views are among the best Nepal photographs you'll take.

Booking

Walk-in booking is available at dozens of offices along Lakeside. Reputable operators: Blue Sky Paragliding, Sunrise Paragliding, Gliders Paragliding. Travel Himalaya Nepal can arrange paragliding as part of a combined Pokhara + trek package.
