Key facts

- Hurricane Isaias was a Category 2 storm with 110 mph winds early Friday 9 October, expected to make landfall late Friday night or early Saturday on the northern Gulf Coast.
- American, United, Delta, JetBlue and Southwest have all issued waivers, but the airports, dates and fare-difference rules differ.
- Destin-Fort Walton Beach airport closed Thursday; Pensacola closed Friday morning.
If you are booked through New Orleans, Pensacola, Mobile, Gulfport-Biloxi or Destin-Fort Walton Beach this weekend, you can change your flight without a change fee on every major US carrier, but only if you act within each airline’s window. Delta waives fare differences only if you rebook digitally before 13 October. American’s waiver depends on when you bought the ticket.
Which airlines are waiving change fees for Isaias?
All five big carriers serving the northern Gulf Coast have issued waivers, according to Travel Market Report’s 9 October roundup of the airline notices. The details are not the same, so check your own airport and booking date against the table.

| Airline | Airports covered | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| American | MSY, PNS, VPS, GPT, MOB | Tickets bought on or before 6 Oct for travel 9–11 Oct; no change fee or fare difference; rebook 7–14 Oct, same cabin and city pair |
| United | MSY, PNS, GPT, MOB | Travel 9 and 10 Oct; change fee and fare difference waived inside the approved window, same cabin |
| Delta | PNS, VPS, GPT, MOB (not MSY) | Travel 9 or 10 Oct; no administrative fee; fare difference waived only if rebooked digitally before 13 Oct |
| JetBlue | MSY | Travel 9 and 10 Oct, booked before 8 Oct; change or cancel with no penalty; rebook through 14 Oct |
| Southwest | VPS, MSY, ECP, PNS | Travel through 10 Oct; rebook in original class or fly standby within 14 days at no extra charge |
The big catch is Delta and New Orleans. Delta’s waiver does not list MSY, while American, United, JetBlue and Southwest do. If you are flying Delta into New Orleans, do not assume you are covered; ask the airline directly.
How bad is the storm and which airports are closed?
Isaias is a dangerous hurricane, and the National Hurricane Center expects only slight weakening before landfall. As of early Friday it had 110 mph winds, sat about 200 miles south-southeast of the mouth of the Mississippi and was moving north at about 20 mph.

Destin-Fort Walton Beach (VPS) shut on Thursday and will stay closed until further notice. Pensacola (PNS) closed on Friday morning. Mobile, Gulfport-Biloxi and New Orleans are expected to be disrupted. Even if your own flight is still showing as on time, the aircraft that would operate it may be stuck elsewhere, so expect knock-on cancellations.
What are you owed if the airline cancels anyway?
If an airline cancels your flight and you decline the rebooking it offers, you are entitled to a refund to your original form of payment. That US Department of Transportation refund rule applies whatever the reason for the cancellation, including weather. What a hurricane does change is compensation: airlines are not required by federal rule to pay you cash, hotels or meals for a weather cancellation, although some will help voluntarily.

That is why the waiver matters. Changing before the storm, on the airline’s terms, keeps you in control of the new date. Waiting for a cancellation leaves you with a refund but no guaranteed seat once thousands of people rebook for the same few days after landfall.
What this means for you
Move your trip now rather than at the airport. Rebook for a date after the storm has cleared, in the same cabin, and screenshot the waiver page for your airline in case the agent disagrees later. Cruise passengers should note that Carnival has a weather alert over 12 Gulf sailings and Royal Caribbean and Celebrity are reviewing itineraries near New Orleans, with no cancellations announced yet.
What should you do in the next few hours?
Open your airline’s app, find your booking, and look for the Isaias waiver notice before you call; the phone queues will be long. Make sure travel insurance bought before the storm was named is checked for hurricane wording, because policies bought after a storm is named usually exclude it as a known event. If your trip is through Pensacola or Destin, assume disruption into the weekend.
