Schoolies Is Weeks Away, and the Insurance Gap Smartraveller Warns About Can Run to $100,000

Smartraveller's schoolies advice says no insurance can mean paying costs up to $100,000. Here is what that covers, what it doesn't, and what parents should check.

At a glance

Australian school leavers heading to Bali, Fiji, Vanuatu or Thailand for schoolies are being told by the government to buy travel insurance before they go. Without it, Smartraveller says, a medical emergency abroad can leave you personally liable for costs that reach $100,000. The Gold Coast schoolies week runs 21 to 27 November 2026, so the overseas trips are being booked now.

Key facts

  • Smartraveller says costs can reach $100,000 if something goes wrong without the right insurance
  • Its schoolies guidance covers Bali, Fiji, Vanuatu and Thailand
  • Drink spiking and methanol poisoning are the two drinks risks it names
  • Red Frogs volunteers work in Bali, Fiji and Vanuatu during schoolies
  • The Australian Government does not pay legal fees for Australians charged overseas

Why is insurance the first thing Smartraveller tells school leavers to sort?

Because the bill for a serious injury or illness abroad lands on the traveller, and Smartraveller puts the worst case at up to $100,000. That is the figure on the government's schoolies page, and it is why the advice is to buy cover before you book anything else. Most school leavers are 17 or 18, so in practice the person who ends up exposed to that bill is a parent.

What this means for you

Buy the policy the same day you pay for the flights, not the week before you leave. Cover bought after a problem is already in the news, or after you are ill, will usually exclude it. Read the alcohol and adventure-activity clauses, because those are where schoolies claims tend to fail.

What risks does the government name for drinks and parties?

Two. Smartraveller warns about drink spiking and about methanol poisoning, and its advice is to stay with people you trust at parties, bars, nightclubs and in taxis. Its Indonesia advice adds that cases of methanol in drinks have been reported in Bali and Lombok, that local spirits such as arak have been involved, and that bottle labelling may not be accurate.

Early methanol symptoms are fatigue, headaches and nausea, followed by vision problems such as sensitivity to light and blurred or reduced sight. You cannot tell a tainted drink by sight, smell or taste. If a friend develops those symptoms after drinking, get them to a hospital and tell the doctors alcohol may have been the cause. Do not wait to see if it passes.

Methanol poisoningEarly symptoms: fatigue, headache, nausea, then vision problems; seek emergency care

What can the Australian Government actually do if it goes wrong?

Less than most families assume. DFAT's consular material says officials cannot get a person out of jail or interfere in another country's legal process. They can visit a detainee, give a list of local English-speaking lawyers and contact family, but they cannot recommend a lawyer. The Australian Government does not cover legal representation or translation costs for Australians facing criminal charges overseas, and Smartraveller's detained-abroad page says travel insurance won't cover prison expenses either.

Who helps on the ground, and what should you check before booking?

Red Frogs, the volunteer group, is active in Bali, Fiji and Vanuatu during schoolies, and Smartraveller describes its volunteers as offering peer support without judgement. We could not confirm the 2026 dates for those overseas programs, so check redfrogs.com.au before you pick a week. On the Gold Coast, Red Frogs run a 24/7 hotline on 1300 557 123.

4destinations covered by its schoolies guidance

Before you pay, check these four things in this order:

  • Subscribe to the Smartraveller updates for your destination and any transit stop.
  • Confirm the policy covers hospital stays and medical evacuation, and read what it says about alcohol.
  • Give a parent the Consular Emergency Centre number and the insurer's 24-hour line.
  • Agree a rule that nobody leaves a group alone, and nobody drinks from an unlabelled or shared bottle.

Is there a safer first big trip than a party week?

For some school leavers, yes. A short guided trek is the opposite of a party week: sober, supervised and cheap per day. We take first-time young trekkers on Poon Hill in four days, with a licensed guide and altitude advice from day one. The same insurance rule applies there too, so read the altitude clause before you buy.

Our honest view is that a schoolies trip is fine if the insurance, the group rules and the emergency numbers are in place before the flight. If they are not, the trip is not ready, however cheap the package looks.
