All four ways to travel from Kathmandu to Pokhara compared — cost, duration, comfort, and which to choose for trekkers heading to Annapurna.
Kathmandu to Pokhara: Your Options
Most Nepal trekking itineraries pass through both Kathmandu (international gateway) and Pokhara (Annapurna gateway). The 200km journey between them can be done four ways — each with distinct trade-offs of cost, time, and comfort.
Option 1: Flight (35 minutes)
Cost: USD $80–130 one-way (foreigners pay different rates than Nepali nationals). Airlines: Buddha Air, Yeti Airlines, Shree Airlines. Departs from Kathmandu Domestic Terminal (15-minute taxi from Thamel). Scenic mountain views from the right-side window. Book directly through airline websites.
Pros: 35 minutes vs 7+ hours. Views of the Himalayan chain from the window. Arrives at Pokhara Regional Airport, 15 minutes from Lakeside.
Cons: Weather delays common (especially December–February fog). Lost baggage possible. Cost is 5–10× the bus. Pokhara Airport closed during some monsoon storms.
Book: 2–3 weeks ahead for October and March departures. Same-day bookings often possible in shoulder season.
Option 2: Tourist Bus (7–8 hours)
Cost: NPR 800–1,200 ($6–9) for tourist/AC bus. Departs from various points in Thamel — buses pick up at hotels. Operates both morning (7am) and evening departures.
Pros: Comfortable reclining seats, air conditioning, designated stops for meals. Direct hotel pickup in Thamel. Stops at scenic viewpoints. Sociable — meet other trekkers.
Cons: 7–8 hours on winding mountain road. Some motion sickness risk. Road quality is variable; occasional delays. Evening buses arrive late at night in Pokhara.
Best for: Budget travelers who want comfort without the local bus experience. Recommended for most international tourists.
Option 3: Local Public Bus (7–9 hours)
Cost: NPR 400–600 ($3–4.50). Departs from Gongabu Bus Park (New Bus Park) in Kathmandu — 30-minute taxi from Thamel. Frequent departures from 6am.
Pros: Cheapest option. Authentic local experience. Frequent departures throughout the day.
Cons: Crowded, no air conditioning, irregular schedules. Stops frequently for passengers. Slower than tourist buses. Luggage handling in overhead racks or roof can be chaotic. Not recommended for travelers with large backpacks or low motion sickness tolerance.
Best for: Budget-maximising travelers comfortable with local transport. Fine for experienced travelers.
Option 4: Private Car or Taxi (6–7 hours)
Cost: NPR 8,000–12,000 ($60–90) for a private car with driver. Can be arranged through hotels in Kathmandu, or through travel agencies including Travel Himalaya Nepal. Comfortable 5-seat SUV for 1–4 passengers.
Pros: Depart when you want. Direct door-to-door. Driver handles route, stops, and luggage. Stop at Manakamana temple cable car if desired. No schedule constraints.
Cons: Most expensive road option. Same winding road, similar duration. Worth the premium for groups of 3–4 (comparable cost per person to tourist bus).
Best for: Families with children, groups of 3–4, travelers with lots of luggage, or those who value flexibility over cost.
Quickest Way to Compare
| Option | Time | Cost | Comfort |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flight | 35 min | $80–130 | Excellent |
| Tourist bus | 7–8 hrs | $6–9 | Good |
| Local bus | 7–9 hrs | $3–4.50 | Basic |
| Private car | 6–7 hrs | $60–90 | Excellent |
Which Should You Choose?
Most first-time Nepal travelers: tourist bus (cost-effective, comfortable, social). For limited time or comfort priority: fly. Groups of 3+: private car often works out similar cost to per-person flight prices. Budgeting solo trekkers: local bus is genuinely fine, just prepare for a long day.
