Sunrise over the Himalaya is unforgettable. Guide to Nepal's best sunrise viewpoints — Poon Hill, Kala Patthar, Sarangkot, Nagarkot, and Gokyo Ri — with how to reach each and what you'll see.
- Sarangkot (Pokhara) and Nagarkot (Kathmandu) are the easiest world-class sunrises — both reached by a short pre-dawn drive, no trek required.
- Poon Hill (3,210m) is the most famous trekker's sunrise; Kala Patthar (5,545m) and Gokyo Ri (5,357m) are the high, epic rewards on the Everest trails.
- Trek in autumn or winter for the clearest skies and arrive at the viewpoint before first light for the best colour.
- Dress warmly, bring a headlamp, and add a buffer day in case one morning is clouded out.
Dawn on the roof of the world
There's nothing like watching the first light hit an 8,000m peak — the snow turning gold and pink while the valleys stay in shadow. Nepal has some of the planet's greatest sunrise viewpoints, from easy roadside spots to hard-won high passes.
Poon Hill (3,210m)
The most famous sunrise in Nepal, and the most accessible great one. A pre-dawn climb from Ghorepani brings you to the viewpoint as the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges ignite. Reached on the beginner-friendly Ghorepani Poon Hill trek. The classic.
Kala Patthar (5,545m)
The ultimate Everest sunrise — and the highest of these viewpoints. Climbed pre-dawn from Gorak Shep on the Everest Base Camp trek, it delivers the iconic head-on view of Everest's summit pyramid in dawn alpenglow. Cold, hard, and unforgettable.
Sarangkot (1,592m)
Above Pokhara, the easiest world-class sunrise — a short pre-dawn drive to a viewpoint where the entire Annapurna range, including Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), lights up over Phewa Lake. No trek required; perfect for all travelers.
Gokyo Ri (5,357m)
On the Gokyo Lakes trek, a dawn climb rewards you with arguably Nepal's best panorama — four 8,000m peaks (Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu) above turquoise lakes and a vast glacier. Quieter than Kala Patthar.
Nagarkot (2,195m)
The classic Kathmandu Valley sunrise, 32km from the capital. On a clear day the Himalaya stretches across the horizon, sometimes including a distant Everest. Easy road access; stay overnight for the dawn show. The most accessible from Kathmandu.
Chandragiri & Dhulikhel
Other easy Kathmandu-area options: the Chandragiri cable car hilltop (2,551m) and the Newari town of Dhulikhel both offer broad Himalayan sunrises with minimal effort.

Tips for a great sunrise
Trek in autumn or winter for the clearest skies. Arrive at the viewpoint before first light — the best colours come just before and as the sun crests. Dress warmly (pre-dawn at altitude is bitterly cold). Bring a headlamp for the climb up in the dark, a hot drink if you can, and let the camera wait a moment so you actually watch it. A buffer day helps in case one morning is clouded out.
The verdict
For an easy, spectacular sunrise: Sarangkot (Pokhara) or Nagarkot (Kathmandu). For the trekker's reward: Poon Hill (accessible) or Kala Patthar and Gokyo Ri (high and epic). However you reach it, Himalayan sunrise is one of travel's great experiences.
