Complete Kathmandu travel guide: the 10 best temples, best neighbourhoods (Thamel vs Patan), street food guide, safety tips, and how many days you actually need.
How Many Days Do You Need in Kathmandu?
Three days is the honest minimum to see Kathmandu Valley properly. Two days feels rushed; four days gives you space to slow down and explore Patan and Bhaktapur without a clock. If you're using Kathmandu only as a gateway to trekking, one intensive day covering Pashupatinath and Boudhanath is feasible — but you'll leave wanting more.
The 10 Essential Kathmandu Sights
1. Pashupatinath Temple
Nepal's most sacred Hindu site, built on the banks of the Bagmati River. The cremation ghats are open to visitors (respectful distance only) — witnessing a cremation is a profound and sobering experience that reframes everything else in Nepal. Entry for non-Hindus is NPR 1,000; the outer courtyards are free. Go in the afternoon (3–5pm) when cremations are most frequent and the light is golden.
2. Boudhanath Stupa
The largest stupa in Nepal and the spiritual center of Tibetan Buddhism outside Tibet. The surrounding neighborhood is full of Tibetan monasteries, prayer wheel shops, and good coffee. Walk the kora (clockwise circumambulation) with pilgrims at dawn or dusk. Entry NPR 400.
3. Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple)
The hilltop stupa west of Thamel — 365 steps up, with rhesus macaques everywhere. The 360-degree valley view justifies the climb. Go early morning for the best light. Entry NPR 200.
4. Patan Durbar Square
The finest medieval architecture in the Kathmandu Valley, 30 minutes from Thamel by taxi. The three palaces and 55+ temples around the square are UNESCO-listed. Spend at least two hours here. Entry NPR 1,000 (includes access to the Patan Museum — don't skip it).
5. Bhaktapur Durbar Square
A half-day trip east of Kathmandu. Bhaktapur is arguably the best-preserved medieval city in Asia — most of it survived the 2015 earthquake intact. The Nyatapola Temple (5-storey pagoda), the 55-Window Palace, and the pottery square are the highlights. Entry NPR 1,800 for foreigners — the fee funds restoration work. Bhaktapur also has the best juju dhau (king curd) in Nepal.
6. Changu Narayan
Nepal's oldest temple (4th century AD), on a hilltop above Bhaktapur. Rarely crowded even in peak season. The carvings here predate anything in Kathmandu's main squares. Worth combining with Bhaktapur for a full day out.
7. Kopan Monastery
A working Tibetan Buddhist monastery on a hill north of Boudhanath. Open to visitors; meditation courses available (book months in advance). The views over the valley at sunset are remarkable.
8. Durbar Square (Kathmandu)
The historic core of old Kathmandu, with the Kumari Chowk (home of the living goddess), Kasthamandap (the city's namesake), and Taleju Temple. Significantly damaged in 2015 but reconstruction is ongoing. Entry NPR 1,000. Go on a weekday morning to avoid crowds.
9. Asan Tol Market
The beating commercial heart of old Kathmandu — a daily wholesale spice and grocery bazaar that has operated continuously since the 7th century. Free, chaotic, and completely alive. Walk from Thamel through the old city lanes to get here.
10. Namobuddha / Namo Buddha
A 2-hour drive east of Kathmandu (or a 2-day walk from Panauti). One of the most sacred Buddhist sites in the world — a hillside monastery complex with extraordinary views of the Himalayan ranges on clear days. Best as a full-day trip combining with Panauti medieval town.
Thamel vs Patan: Where to Stay
Thamel is the backpacker/trekker hub — noisy, convenient, packed with gear shops, guesthouses, tour agencies, and restaurants for every budget. Good if you're booking treks, need gear, or want to be near Swayambhunath. Budget USD 15–60/night. Patan (Lalitpur) is quieter, more cultured, walkable to the Durbar Square. Better restaurants (Patan has Kathmandu's best fine dining), fewer touts, better boutique hotels. Budget USD 60–200/night. Both are 20–30 minutes from the airport.
Street Food Guide
- Momos: Nepal's national dumpling — steamed or fried, with buff (buffalo) or veg filling. Eat at Ama Ko Kitchen (Thamel) or any hole-in-the-wall. NPR 150–200 for 10.
- Sel roti: A sweet, crispy ring bread fried in ghee. Best at dawn outside temple gates. NPR 20–30 each.
- Chatamari: Newari rice flour crepe with egg, minced meat, or vegetables. The Newar equivalent of pizza — eat it at Bhojan Griha or any Newari restaurant in old Kathmandu.
- Yomari: Steamed dumplings filled with molasses and sesame — a Newari festival food, available year-round at specialist shops in Bhaktapur.
- Tongba: Fermented millet beer, drunk warm through a bamboo straw. A highland staple; find it at Nepali restaurants in Thamel. NPR 300–400/pot.
Kathmandu Safety Tips
Kathmandu is generally safe for tourists. Be aware of: taxi overcharging (always agree a price before getting in, or use inDrive/Pathao apps); trekking agency touts in Thamel (verify NTB registration); gem shop scams ("my friend's factory"); and air pollution — the valley's air quality is among the worst in South Asia, pack a good mask for the dry season (November–March). Drink only bottled or filtered water. Don't eat salads at street stalls. The Thamel area is fine at night; avoid the unlit lanes of old Kathmandu after 9pm.
