What's the weather like for trekking in Nepal each month? This month-by-month guide covers temperatures, skies, trail conditions, and the best treks for every month of 2026.
- The two best trekking windows are October–November (clearest, most stable skies) and March–April (warm, rhododendrons in bloom).
- Winter (Dec–Feb) suits lower-altitude treks like Poon Hill and Ghandruk; high passes such as Thorong La are often snow-closed.
- During the monsoon (Jun–Aug), trek only in rain-shadow regions — Upper Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu — which stay dry and lush.
- October is the single best month: crystal-clear post-monsoon skies, stable weather, and Nepal's biggest festivals.
Nepal trekking, month by month
Nepal's trekking conditions change dramatically through the year. Here's what to expect each month so you can time your trek perfectly. For the bigger picture, see our guide to the best time to trek in Nepal.
| Season | Conditions | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Cold, clear, quiet; sub-zero nights; high passes snow-closed | Poon Hill, Ghandruk, lower Langtang |
| Spring (Mar–May) | Warming, rhododendrons blooming, some haze; passes opening | Almost any trek; climbing season |
| Monsoon (Jun–Aug) | Hot, wet, cloudy, leeches; obscured views | Rain-shadow only: Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu |
| Autumn (Sep–Nov) | Clearing to crystal-clear, stable, comfortable | Every trek — peak season |
January
Cold and clear. Excellent visibility, very quiet trails, but sub-zero nights at altitude and high passes (Thorong La, Three Passes) often snow-closed. Best for low/mid-altitude treks: Poon Hill, Ghandruk, lower Langtang.
February
Still cold but warming late in the month; clear skies. Similar to January — great for lower treks, high passes still risky. Quiet and beautiful.
March
Spring begins. Warming, rhododendrons start blooming at lower elevations, generally clear with occasional afternoon haze. Excellent all-round trekking month; high passes start opening.
April
Peak spring season. Warm, rhododendron forests in full bloom, good views (some haze possible), and the Himalayan climbing season is in full swing. One of the best months for almost any trek.
May
Warm to hot at lower elevations, increasing haze and the first pre-monsoon showers late in the month. Still good high up; great for high-altitude treks before the rains. Can be hazy for views.
June
Monsoon arrives. Hot, humid, wet, with cloud hiding the peaks and leeches on the trails. Trek only in the rain-shadow regions (Upper Mustang, Dolpo) or do cultural/wildlife travel.
July & August
Peak monsoon. Heavy rain, landslides, frequent flight delays, obscured views. Best avoided for mountain trekking; rain-shadow treks (Mustang, Dolpo, Nar Phu) remain viable and lush.
September
Monsoon retreats, usually clearing mid-to-late month. The landscape is brilliant green and washed clean. Trails quiet early in the month, filling as autumn begins. A lovely transitional time.
October
The best month. Crystal-clear post-monsoon skies, stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and Nepal's biggest festivals (Dashain, Tihar). Peak season — book ahead. Ideal for every trek.
November
Also superb. Clear and stable, slightly cooler, with excellent views. The second half of peak season — still busy, still excellent for all treks including EBC and the Circuit.
December
Cold sets in, but skies are often very clear. Good for lower-altitude treks; high passes begin closing with snow. Quiet trails and sharp views for those who can handle the cold.
Quick verdict
The two best windows are October–November (the clearest, most stable) and March–April (warm, blooming). Winter suits lower treks; the monsoon suits the rain shadow. Plan around the month and you'll trek in the right conditions.

What is the best month to trek in Nepal?
October is the single best month — it offers crystal-clear post-monsoon skies, stable weather, comfortable temperatures, and Nepal's biggest festivals. November and the spring months of March and April are also excellent.
Can you trek in Nepal during the monsoon?
Yes, but only in rain-shadow regions such as Upper Mustang, Dolpo, and Nar Phu, which stay dry and lush from June to August. Most mountain treks are best avoided in the monsoon due to rain, landslides, flight delays, and obscured views.
