When European Christmas markets really open and close in 2026

Europe’s Christmas markets open earlier than most people expect and close earlier than almost anyone expects. The big ones start in the middle of November, and most of them shut on 23 or 24 December. If you fly over for the quiet week between Christmas and New Year, you will land to find the stalls being dismantled. Below are the 2026 dates we checked on the markets’ own sites, and the window when they are all running at once.

These four are verified on the official market or city websites, not from a round-up. We have left out cities whose official pages we could not reach, because a Christmas market date copied from an aggregator is exactly the kind of thing that changes and strands someone.

Cologne’s cathedral market closes for Totensonntag on 22 November. Nuremberg opens with its ceremony at 17:30 on the 27th.

The week that catches people out

The days between Christmas and New Year are the worst week of the season to go market-hunting. Nuremberg closes on Christmas Eve. Cologne’s cathedral market closes the day before that. It is a reasonable assumption that a Christmas market runs over Christmas, and it is wrong almost everywhere: the market belongs to Advent, the four weeks leading up to the day, and the stalls come down when Advent ends.

There are exceptions, and they are worth knowing if your leave falls in that week. Vienna’s Rathausplatz market runs to 26 December, and its ice rink on the same square keeps going into January. Berlin’s Humboldt Forum market runs to 3 January 2027. Some squares host a separate New Year market after the Christmas one has closed, so a busy square on 28 December is not proof the Christmas market was still running.

Go in the third week of November instead

The same stalls, the same lights, a fraction of the crowd. By 18 November in 2026, Vienna, Cologne and Berlin are all running, and Nuremberg is the only one of the four still to open. Mid-November also lands before the December weekend peak, which is when hotel prices in these cities climb hardest.

If you want all four in one trip, the overlap is 27 November to 23 December. December weekends are the crush in all four cities, so midweek in that first week of December is the sweet spot: everything open, nothing queueing.

What it costs to do this properly

The markets are free to enter; the trip is what costs money. A few of Berlin’s charge a small entry, and Vienna’s rink charges for skating, but the spending is on flights, hotels and glühwein. Two things save more than any discount code. Fly midweek and stay midweek, because these are weekend-break cities in December and the price difference between a Tuesday and a Saturday night is the single biggest line in the budget. And pick one city as a base with a day trip by train rather than a city a day, because a night in a hotel costs more than a return train ticket almost everywhere in this region.

If you would rather have mountains than markets

The same weeks are the quietest, clearest stretch of the year in the Nepal Himalaya. December in Nepal brings stable weather, thin crowds and very cold nights at altitude; the lower trails are still comfortable walking in the day. It is the opposite trade to a European city break: you swap short dark afternoons for long clear mornings, and December room prices in Europe for the cheapest trekking season of the year.
