easyJet’s Italy strike on 16 October is the kind of strike that pays out

easyJet flight crew in Italy strike for 24 hours on 16 October. Because it is the airline’s own staff, a late cancellation can be worth €250 to €600.

easyJet’s flight crew covered by Italy’s strike call will stop work for 24 hours on Friday 16 October 2026, and unlike the controllers’ strike on 30 September, this is the kind of strike that can earn you cash compensation. The stoppage is registered nationally in the Italian transport ministry’s strike register, from 00:00 to 23:59. Under EU law, a strike by an airline’s own staff is not an “extraordinary circumstance”, so a cancellation announced late can be worth €250 to €600 a passenger. One date decides most claims: 2 October, fourteen days before the strike.

Key facts

  • Friday 16 October 2026, 00:00–23:59: 24-hour national strike by easyJet flight crew, called by the USB union.
  • Also on 16 October: a 24-hour strike by security staff at Venice Marco Polo airport.
  • Italy protects flights departing 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00 during air strikes.
  • The EU’s top court ruled in 2021 that a strike by an airline’s own staff does not excuse it from paying compensation.

What is registered for 16 October

Three air-transport strikes are listed for 16 October, and the easyJet one is the one most passengers will feel. We read the ministry’s register on 2 October. It lists a national 24-hour strike by easyJet flight crew, a 24-hour strike by security staff at Venice Marco Polo, and a 24-hour strike by Poste Air Cargo’s technical crew, which carries mail, not passengers. Unlike 30 September, the register did not show an air traffic control strike for 16 October.

Why this strike can pay you and the last one could not

The difference is who is striking. When air traffic controllers walk out, the airline cannot control it, so the fixed cash compensation under EU Regulation 261/2004 does not apply. When the airline’s own crew strike, it can. In Airhelp v SAS (case C-28/20, 23 March 2021) the Court of Justice of the EU ruled that a strike called by a union of the airline’s staff, for example over pay, is part of the airline’s normal business and does not count as an extraordinary circumstance.

Within the EU over 1,500 km, or 1,500–3,500 km€400
Over 3,500 km€600

The airline also owes care on the day, whatever the cause: meals and drinks while you wait, a hotel if you are stuck overnight, and the choice of a refund or a new flight. How the rebooking works, including when it must put you on another airline, is in our guide to getting rebooked after a cancellation.

The 14-day rule that decides most claims

If easyJet tells you about the cancellation at least 14 days before you fly, no cash is owed. For a 16 October flight that deadline is 2 October. Told later than that, you are owed compensation unless the airline offers an alternative close to your original times. With seven to fourteen days’ notice, that means a flight leaving no more than two hours earlier and arriving less than four hours later. With under seven days’ notice, it means one leaving no more than an hour earlier and arriving less than two hours later. A delay of three hours or more at arrival can also qualify, under the same courtA delay of three hours or more at arrival can also qualify under the same court rulings.rsquo;s 2009 Sturgeon ruling.

What to do now

Check whether your flight departs inside Italy’s protected bands of 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00, which must operate. Save the email that tells you about any cancellation, because its date decides the claim. If you are flying out of Venice that day, allow extra time at security whatever airline you fly. And if a tight connection onward to a long-haul flight depends on this leg, move it now: compensation repays a ticket, not the trip you miss.

If Italy is the start of a longer trip

Protect the connection, not just the flight. A strike day rarely ruins the hop itself; it ruins the onward flight booked with no margin. That is why we ask everyone flying to Nepal to land a day before a trek starts. If you are flying in late October, note that the monsoon is running late and roads to Manang and Mustang were cut by September’s rain, so a buffer day pays twice. The next day brings a bigger one: French pilots and cabin crew have filed a five-day strike from 17 to 21 October. For non-EU flights, the US and Canadian rules are different, and our compensation guide covers them side by side. If you are tempted to buy insurance now, read why cover bought after a strike is announced will not pay for it.

Is easyJet striking in Italy on 16 October 2026?

Yes. The Italian transport ministry’s strike register lists a national 24-hour strike by easyJet flight crew on 16 October, from 00:00 to 23:59, called by the USB union.

Can I claim compensation if the easyJet strike cancels my flight?

Often, yes. A strike by an airline’s own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance under EU law (Court of Justice, case C-28/20). You can claim €250 to €600 depending on distance, unless you were told at least 14 days ahead or offered a close alternative flight.

Which flights still run during an Italian air strike?

Flights scheduled to depart between 07:00 and 10:00 and between 18:00 and 21:00 are protected under Italy’s strike rules, and ENAC, the civil aviation authority, publishes the list of guaranteed flights before the day.
