If you fly a French airline 17–21 October, read this before you pack

French pilots and cabin crew have filed a five-day strike notice for 17–21 October 2026. Air France and Transavia are covered. What you are owed.

Pilots and cabin crew at French airlines have filed a notice to strike for five days, from 00:01 on Saturday 17 October to 23:59 on Wednesday 21 October 2026, Paris time. The notice, signed by five unions including the pilots’ union SNPL, covers all flight crew of French airlines that run scheduled flights, which includes Air France and Transavia France. The dispute is with the government, not the airlines: the unions want flight crew excluded from a pension reform that takes effect on 1 January 2027. If you fly a French airline that week, expect the schedule to be confirmed only a day or two ahead, and plan around that now.

Key facts

  • 17 October 00:01 to 21 October 23:59 (Paris time), five days, national.
  • Signed by UNSA PNC, SNPNC, SNGAF, SNPL and UNAC, covering pilots and cabin crew.
  • Applies to French airlines operating scheduled flights, among them Air France and Transavia France.
  • The trigger is the cumul emploi-retraite pension reform due on 1 January 2027.

What the unions have actually filed

A national strike notice, published by the cabin crew union SNPNC-FO on 30 September. It asks all flight crew of French scheduled airlines to stop work for the full five days. The unions want pilots, cabin crew and their own pension fund, the CRPN, written out of the reform in law rather than protected by government circulars, which they say are not reliable enough. Air Journal reported that the unions remain “ready to discuss again with the government”, so the notice can still be lifted. French unions often file and then lift a notice once talks move; one at easyJet France was lifted for 1 and 2 October in September.

Why you will not know your flight’s fate until late

Because French crew only have to declare that they will strike 48 hours ahead. Under the 2012 loi Diard, each airline employee who intends to strike must tell the employer at least 48 hours before. That lets airlines build a reduced schedule, but it also means the real timetable for 17 October appears around 15 October, and for each later day about two days ahead. The strike also falls at the start of France’s autumn school holidays, when flights are full, so seats on the flights that do operate will go quickly.

What the airline owes you

Care and a choice of refund or rebooking are owed whatever the cause; cash compensation is less certain than usual. Under EU Regulation 261/2004, a cancelled passenger is owed a refund or a new flight, plus meals and a hotel if stuck overnight. In 2021 the EU’s Court of Justice ruled (case C-28/20) that a strike by an airline’s own staff over pay is not an extraordinary circumstance, so €250 to €600 was payable. This strike is aimed at a government reform rather than the airlines, and airlines may argue it was outside their control. Claim anyway if you are cancelled at short notice, but do not budget on the money. How rebooking works, including when the airline must put you on a rival carrier, is set out in our guide to getting rebooked after a cancellation.

What to do now

If you are booked on a French airline between 17 and 21 October, check now whether your fare can be changed free, because airlines usually waive fees once a strike is confirmed and the cheap seats go first. Avoid tight connections through Paris that week. Watch the airline’s app from 48 hours before departure. Keep every receipt, and screenshot any message that gives the reason for a cancellation. Buying travel insurance now will not cover this strike: as we explained in why cover bought after a strike is announced will not pay, it is already a known event.

If Paris is your connection to a longer trip

Move the connection, not just the flight. A five-day strike makes a same-day connection through Paris the weakest link of any long-haul itinerary that week. If your trip runs on to Asia, route through another hub if you can, or arrive a day early. That is the same advice we give every client flying to Nepal for a trek: the onward flight and the first day of a trek cannot be refunded by an airline. For other strikes this month, see easyJet’s Italy strike on 16 October, and for the rules outside Europe, our compensation guide.

Is there an airline strike in France in October 2026?

Yes, a notice is filed. Five unions representing pilots and cabin crew at French scheduled airlines have called a national strike from 00:01 on 17 October to 23:59 on 21 October 2026, Paris time. It can still be lifted if talks with the government succeed.

Will Air France flights be cancelled from 17 to 21 October?

Some may be. The notice covers flight crew at French airlines, including Air France. Crew must declare 48 hours in advance whether they will strike, so the airline’s reduced schedule will only be known shortly before each day.

Can I get compensation if the French strike cancels my flight?

You are always owed a refund or rebooking, plus meals and a hotel if needed. Cash compensation of €250 to €600 is possible but less certain than for a pay strike, because this strike targets a government reform and airlines may argue it was beyond their control.
