Japan from the UK, and you may not need six months left on your passport

British visitors get a visa on arrival for up to 90 days, with no advance application. The passport only has to last the length of the stay, per GOV.UK.

British visitors to Japan do not need to apply for a visa before they travel, and their passport only has to be valid for the length of the stay, with no extra months required. GOV.UK says tourists and business visitors can get a visa on arrival for up to 90 days, and for a longer stay you can apply for a 90-day extension at an immigration office. The rule is the opposite of the six-month expectation many travellers bring from other countries, so check it before you assume your passport is too close to expiry.

Key takeaways
  • No advance visa. A British passport gets you a visa on arrival for tourism or business.
  • Ninety days on arrival, and an extension of another 90 days from an immigration office.
  • Passport valid for the stay, nothing more. GOV.UK states no additional validity period is required.
  • Check each destination on the day you book. Rules change, and GOV.UK is the source to check.

Do British nationals need a visa for Japan?

No advance visa is needed for tourism or business up to 90 days; you get it on arrival. GOV.UK’s entry page says you do not need to apply before you travel.

How long is the passport validity rule?

The passport must be valid for the length of your stay, and GOV.UK says no additional validity period is required. That is the rule that surprises people, because many destinations ask for six months beyond the date of arrival. Japan does not. Keep the passport in date for the whole stay, and do not treat the rule as a licence to travel on a book that expires during the trip.

Can I stay longer than 90 days?

Yes, by applying for an extension of another 90 days at an immigration office in Japan. GOV.UK describes this as the route for a longer stay, so plan the application before your initial 90 days end rather than at the last minute.

How does it compare with other destinations?

Japan is an easier entry than destinations that ask for six months of validity, such as Thailand. Our guide to the six-month passport rule lists the places that apply it, and visas, passports and entry covers the other checks to make before you fly. Check each destination on the day you book, because the rules can change.
