What an American actually needs to plan a Nepal trek in 2026

Nepal is one of the most rewarding — and best-value — big trips an American can take. The trekking is the best on Earth and the visa is easy; what actually trips people up is the logistics: the long-haul routing, the realistic budget, and how many days to plan. This is the complete trip-planning guide for US travelers in 2026.

Getting there: flights from the USA

There are no nonstop flights from the US to Kathmandu (KTM); you connect through a single hub. Two main routings work well. Via the Gulf / Istanbul — Qatar Airways (Doha), Emirates or flydubai (Dubai), Etihad (Abu Dhabi), or Turkish (Istanbul); this is usually shortest from the East Coast (~16–18 hours flying). Via Asia — Korean Air (Seoul), Cathay Pacific (Hong Kong), Singapore Airlines, or Thai (Bangkok); often the better bet from the West Coast. Expect roughly 18–24 hours door-to-door, and round-trip fares of about US$1,000–1,800 depending on season and how far ahead you book.

What a Nepal trek costs from the US (2026)

The guided trek itself is superb value — your biggest variable is the airfare. Here's a realistic all-in estimate for a 2–3 week trip.

Which trek — and a sample itinerary

Two classics suit most first-time US trekkers:

• Everest Base Camp (12 days): fly to Lukla → Phakding → Namche Bazaar (acclimatize) → Tengboche → Dingboche (acclimatize) → Lobuche → Gorak Shep → Everest Base Camp → sunrise at Kala Patthar (5,545m) → descend to Lukla.
• Annapurna Base Camp (9 days): from Pokhara → Ghandruk → Chhomrong → Bamboo → Deurali → MBC → Annapurna Base Camp → return. Gentler, and quick to reach.
• Short on time? Ghorepani–Poon Hill (4–5 days) delivers a legendary Annapurna sunrise.

Insurance is the part Americans get wrong

A US policy that covers "hiking" often stops at an altitude below Everest Base Camp, and almost none of them say so on the marketing page. Base Camp is 5,364m and Kala Patthar, where you go for the view, is 5,545m. Your policy has to cover trekking to that height and it has to cover helicopter evacuation, which is how anyone comes off the trail in a hurry.

Of the providers Americans can actually buy, World Nomads is the one that prints its ceilings: its US plans cover hiking to 6,000m on Standard, 6,500m on Explorer and 8,000m on Epic. Global Rescue is a rescue membership rather than insurance, and its standard membership stops at 15,000 feet (4,600m), below Base Camp, so read which tier you are buying. Shots and health, per the CDC

Nothing is required to enter Nepal, but the CDC recommends a short list, and none of it is exotic. Its Nepal page asks travelers to be up to date on routine vaccines, including measles and COVID-19, and recommends hepatitis A and typhoid for most travelers, with hepatitis B for unvaccinated travelers under 60.

Two more are judgement calls your doctor makes with you. Rabies is worth discussing because, as the CDC puts it, dogs infected with rabies are commonly found in Nepal, and a village dog on a trail is a long way from a clinic. Japanese encephalitis is only for long or rural stays. Malaria pills are not needed for Kathmandu, Pokhara or any of the high treks; the CDC limits that advice to areas below 2,000m in the far-western provinces. How many days off work you actually need

Count two travel days each way and one buffer day for the Lukla flight, then add the trek. This is the table to take to your manager. The prices are the solo rate for our guided trip; they fall in a group.

Two weeks of vacation covers Annapurna Base Camp comfortably and Everest Base Camp only if you use every day of it. If you have ten days, do Poon Hill or the Everest View trek and enjoy them, rather than rushing Base Camp and spending the trip tired.

When to go & what to know

Autumn (Sep–Nov) brings the clearest skies and is peak season — book 2–3 months ahead. Spring (Mar–May) is warm with rhododendron blooms and is the main climbing season. Build in a buffer day or two for the weather-dependent Lukla flight. A licensed guide is required on the main trekking routes (we include one), so independent permits aren't something you arrange yourself.
