Politics rarely changes a trekker's day on the trail — but a leader with a track record of fixing things just might. Before he was Prime Minister, Balen Shah spent four years as Kathmandu's mayor with a single obsession: making the city work. Cleaner streets, reclaimed public spaces, better systems. Now that same energy is pointed at the whole country, and for anyone planning a Nepal trek, that is quietly very good news.

Why trekkers should care

  • As mayor (2022–2026) he made his name on cleanups and infrastructure
  • Kathmandu is the main gateway for almost every trekker
  • National focus is expected on trails, signage and facilities
  • A stated emphasis on sustainable, responsible tourism

From the capital to the trail

The trekker's journey almost always begins in Kathmandu — the flights, the permits, the first and last nights. A capital that runs better means a smoother start and finish to your trip. Beyond the city, the government's signalled priorities — trail maintenance, clearer signage, better mountain facilities and a push on sustainability — align closely with what makes a trek safer and more enjoyable. It is early days, but the direction of travel is encouraging.
