The Helambu Cultural Trek is the closest classic teahouse trek to Kathmandu, winding through the Hyolmo (Helambu Sherpa) heartland north of the valley. With a highest point of just 3,690 metres at Tharepati and gentle, well-graded trails, it is one of Nepal's most accessible Himalayan journeys — ideal for first-time trekkers, families, and anyone short on time.
Over seven days you walk from the rhododendron forests of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park into a landscape of ancient gompas, mani walls and stone Sherpa villages such as Melamchigaon, Tarkeghyang and Sermathang. The trek begins barely an hour from Kathmandu at Sundarijal and ends at Melamchi Bazaar — no domestic flight required.

This trip begins in Pokhara, Nepal’s lakeside trekking town. Most international flights land in Kathmandu, about 200 km away (25 minutes by plane or 6 to 8 hours by tourist bus), so you can either make your own way to Pokhara or let us collect you in Kathmandu.

Best Time to Go
Autumn (Sep–Nov)
The clearest skies of the year and the best views across to Langtang and Ganesh Himal. Quieter than Annapurna or Everest for the same weather.

Spring (Mar–May)
Rhododendron forest in bloom through April, which on this route is the point. Hazier than autumn but warmer, and the villages are busy with planting.

Winter (Dec–Feb)
Genuinely walkable, which is unusual — the lower Helambu route runs year-round. Cold nights and some lodges closed higher up, so the itinerary shortens.

Monsoon (Jun–Aug)
Green, warm and wet. Cloud sits on the ridges most days, so you walk through beautiful forest and see very few mountains. Leeches below 2,500 m.

Langtang National Park Permit
NPR 3,000 (about US$23)Covers Langtang Valley, Gosaikunda and Helambu. SAARC nationals pay NPR 1,500.
TIMS Card
NPR 2,000 (about US$15)Required for all Nepal treks. A licensed guide has been mandatory since 2023.

Merino or synthetic base layers — two sets, one worn one drying
