Both go beyond standard EBC into the Everest region's wilder corners. This guide compares the Gokyo Lakes trek and the Everest Three Passes trek on difficulty, scenery, duration, and who each suits.
- Choose Gokyo Lakes for the best panorama, serene lakes, and a quieter alternative to EBC at similar difficulty.
- Choose Three Passes if you're an experienced, very fit high-altitude trekker wanting the definitive Everest-region challenge.
- Choose Gokyo + EBC via Cho La for an excellent middle ground — lakes, Base Camp and Kala Patthar with just one pass.
- Gokyo is ~2 weeks with no technical passes; Three Passes is ~3 weeks crossing three passes above 5,300m.
Beyond standard EBC
Once you've considered Everest Base Camp, two more ambitious Everest-region treks beckon: the serene Gokyo Lakes and the formidable Three Passes. Both go beyond the standard trail; they suit very different trekkers.
| Factor | Gokyo Lakes | Three Passes |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 12–14 days | 18–21 days |
| High passes | None (on its own) | Kongma La, Cho La, Renjo La |
| Max altitude | 5,357m (Gokyo Ri) | 5,535m (Kongma La) |
| Difficulty | Strenuous, like EBC | Challenging, technical-ish |
| Crowds | Quiet, serene | Remote, very few trekkers |
| Best for | Fit trekkers comfortable at altitude | Experienced high-altitude trekkers |
Gokyo Lakes trek
A 12–14 day trek to a chain of six turquoise glacial lakes and the summit of Gokyo Ri (5,357m), which offers arguably the best panorama in Nepal — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu in one sweep, above the vast Ngozumpa glacier. Difficulty: strenuous but comparable to EBC, with no technical passes if done on its own. Character: quieter, more serene, lake-focused.
Everest Three Passes trek
An 18–21 day circuit crossing three high passes — Kongma La (5,535m), Cho La (5,420m), and Renjo La (5,360m) — linking the Khumbu, Gokyo, and Imja valleys, and including EBC, Kala Patthar, and Gokyo. Difficulty: challenging — three passes above 5,300m, long days, exposure, and possible snow/ice (crampons sometimes needed). Character: the ultimate, most complete Everest-region adventure.
The Three Passes cross terrain above 5,300m with possible snow and ice — crampons are sometimes needed. It demands prior high-altitude experience and excellent acclimatisation, not a first-timer route.
Scenery
Gokyo: the lakes, Gokyo Ri's panorama, the Ngozumpa glacier — a focused, beautiful objective. Three Passes: everything the Khumbu offers, including both EBC and Gokyo, plus the drama of the high passes themselves. Three Passes simply sees more.
Difficulty & time
Gokyo is achievable for fit trekkers comfortable at altitude — similar commitment to EBC, around two weeks. Three Passes is a serious step up: longer (3 weeks), much harder, with technical-ish pass crossings demanding prior high-altitude experience and excellent acclimatisation.
Can you combine?
Yes — the popular middle path is Gokyo + EBC linked by the Cho La pass, giving you the lakes, Gokyo Ri, Base Camp, and Kala Patthar in one ~16-day loop with just one pass — less than the full Three Passes but more than either alone.
Not sure you're ready for all three passes? The Gokyo + EBC via Cho La loop gives you the headline highlights of both treks while crossing only one high pass.
The verdict
Choose Gokyo Lakes for the best panorama, serene lakes, and a quieter alternative to EBC at similar difficulty. Choose the Three Passes if you're an experienced, very fit high-altitude trekker wanting the definitive, most comprehensive Everest-region challenge. Choose Gokyo + EBC via Cho La for an excellent middle ground.

Is the Three Passes trek technical?
It is technical-ish rather than fully technical — the three passes above 5,300m can involve snow and ice, sometimes needing crampons, plus long exposed days. Prior high-altitude experience is essential.
What is the best middle-ground Everest trek?
Gokyo + EBC linked by the Cho La pass — a roughly 16-day loop giving you the lakes, Gokyo Ri, Base Camp and Kala Patthar with just one high pass.
