United, American and Amex all just made status and lounges harder to keep

United, American and Amex each made elite status or lounge access harder to keep in 2026, and none of the three put out a public press release about it. United's top 1K tier needs 32,000 Premier Qualifying Points for 2027, up from 28,000. American's Admirals Club membership rose to $1,400 for a new member, up from $850. Amex cut Centurion Lounge guests from two to one and added a same-flight rule and a 5-hour layover cap, from 8 July 2026. We checked these against multiple independent travel-industry outlets, because none of the three issuer pages loaded for us directly.
- United's change is a threshold, not a formula rewrite. PQP becomes the sole metric for 2027, and the 1K bar rises about 14%.
- American's increase depends on your baseline. Against the new-member price it is about 65%; a renewing member who was paying $800 now pays $1,400, about 75%.
- Amex tightened guests and access, not price. The guest fee itself did not change; what changed is who qualifies to use it.
- None of these came with a public announcement. They surfaced on the companies' own members-area pages and were reported by trade press.
What changed at United?
For the 2027 qualifying year, United's Premier 1K tier needs 32,000 Premier Qualifying Points, up from 28,000, and PQP becomes the only path to status. Flight segments no longer count on their own, though 1K still requires flying at least four segments on United or United Express. Members with an eligible United credit card get a deposit worth 5% of their tier's PQP requirement at the start of the status year. This is reported consistently across multiple travel-industry outlets, including The Points Guy, Upgraded Points and InsideFlyer; United's own newsroom was not reachable for us to confirm against the primary announcement.

What changed at American's Admirals Club?
From 23 August 2026, a new standard Admirals Club membership costs $1,400, up from $850, and a renewing member's price rose from $800 to the same $1,400. AAdvantage Executive Platinum members now pay $1,200 or 120,000 miles, up from $750 or 75,000 miles. Household memberships were discontinued and the renewal discount removed; a new $750 solo-only membership excludes guests and partner lounges. A one-day pass stays at $79, and the Citi AAdvantage Executive World Legend Mastercard still bundles full access, though its own annual fee rose $100. Reported by NerdWallet, Forbes Advisor, Business Traveller and The Points Guy; we could not load American's own membership page to confirm the figures directly.
What changed at Amex Centurion Lounges?
Since 8 July 2026, a cardmember's complimentary guests dropped from two to one, and a guest must hold a confirmed reservation on the cardmember's own flight. Access during a connection is capped at five hours before the connecting flight; a same-day round trip does not count as a connection. The guest fee itself is unchanged. The policy covers the US lounges plus London Heathrow, Tokyo Haneda, Hong Kong, Sydney and Melbourne. Reported by MileLion, Upgraded Points, AFAR and One Mile at a Time; Amex's own Global Lounge Collection page was not reachable for us, so check it directly for your card's current wording.
What should you actually do about it?
If you are close to United 1K for 2026, the current 28,000 PQP bar still applies this year; the 32,000 figure is for 2027 activity. If you hold an Amex that includes Centurion access and you were planning to bring a second guest or use it on a long layover, check the current rule before you travel, because both of those now fail. If Admirals Club was a marginal add-on rather than something you used often, the new pricing is the moment to compare it against a general lounge network instead of renewing on habit. None of these changes are reversible by complaining at the airport; they are account-level rules.
We verified these figures against multiple independent travel-industry outlets, read 17 October 2026, because United's, American's and Amex's own pages did not load for us in this session. Check your own account or the issuer's current page before making a decision based on these numbers.
