Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select vs Globe, and when the lounge passes pay

Choose the Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select if you want free checked bags on American for a small group; choose the Globe only if you will use its Admirals Club passes and its companion ticket, because it costs $350 against $99. Both give a free first checked bag on domestic American itineraries and Group 5 boarding. The Platinum Select covers you and up to four companions and waives its fee for the first 12 months. The Globe covers up to eight companions and adds four Admirals Club Globe Passes a year and, from the second card year, a domestic main-cabin companion ticket. What the extra $251 a year buys

After the first year the Globe costs $251 more than the Platinum Select, and in the first year $350 more, for four lounge passes, a companion ticket from year two and a larger bag benefit.

The four Admirals Club Globe Passes are the easiest part to judge: count the American trips on which you would genuinely sit in an Admirals Club. The companion ticket is worth the price of the second domestic main-cabin round trip you would otherwise have bought, less the $99 ticketing fee and taxes. It is worth a lot on one expensive trip and nothing if you never fly American with the same person. We do not put a dollar figure on miles, passes or the certificate, because each depends on the flights you actually book.

The bag benefit is the Globe’s quiet advantage for families. The Platinum Select covers five travellers on a reservation; the Globe covers nine. A family of six flying domestic American, each checking one bag, pays for one bag on the Platinum Select and none on the Globe.

The welcome offers

The Globe offers 10,000 more miles for $1,500 more spending in three months. The Platinum Select’s bonus is not available to anyone who received that card’s bonus in the past 48 months, so check your history before applying. Both offers can change at any time. The bag benefit stops at the border

On both cards the free first bag applies to domestic American itineraries, so it does nothing for an international trip. That matters if your big trip each year is overseas. American does not fly to Kathmandu, so a Nepal trip means a partner airline for part of the journey, and neither card’s bag benefit applies to that journey. For long-haul travel, a general travel card whose points transfer to many airlines is usually the better tool.

The verdict

For most American flyers the Platinum Select is enough: free domestic bags for up to five people, $0 for the first year and $99 after. Choose the Globe if you travel domestically with a group larger than five, would use four Admirals Club visits a year, and will fly American with a companion at least once a year from the second year.
