United Explorer vs Quest card, and the $200 credit that closes the gap
The Quest costs $200 more a year and pays $200 of United credit automatically. It adds a second free bag; the Explorer keeps two United Club passes.

Choose the United Explorer if you fly United a few times a year and want a free bag and two United Club passes for $150; choose the Quest if you fly United often enough to spend its automatic $200 of United credit every year. That $200, which the Quest pays each account year without any spending requirement, cancels out the $200 fee difference for anyone who buys at least one United ticket a year. Past that, the Quest adds a free second checked bag and higher earning, while the Explorer keeps the lounge passes the Quest does not have.

- The Quest’s $200 TravelBank cash offsets its higher fee for anyone who buys a United ticket each year.
- The Quest adds a free second bag, but both cards cover only you and one companion.
- Only the Explorer gives United Club passes, two a year.
- Buy the ticket with the card. Both cards require it for the free bags after your first 90 days.

Why the Quest’s $200 credit changes the maths
After the first year the Quest costs $200 more, and it gives $200 of United TravelBank cash every account year with no spending requirement. TravelBank cash is spent on United tickets, so if you buy at least one United flight a year, the fee difference is effectively gone. What is left is the Quest’s extra second bag, higher earning and a 10,000-mile award discount each anniversary, set against the Explorer’s two United Club passes. The Explorer’s own TravelBank cash, $100, only arrives after $10,000 of spending in a year.
In the first year the picture is different: the Explorer costs $0 and the Quest $350, so the Quest starts $150 behind even after its $200 credit.
The bag rule both cards share
United’s cards are generous with bags per person but narrow on who is covered: you and one companion on the same reservation. A couple gets the full benefit; a family of four gets it for two people. And after your first 90 days, you must have bought the ticket with the card. If you regularly fly as a family, compare the Delta, Southwest, American and Alaska cards in the best airline credit cards, which cover everyone on the booking.
The partner credits
Chase advertises “over $500” of yearly partner credits on the Explorer and “over $850” on the Quest, and most of them are narrow. They include credits for United Hotels or Renowned Hotels, JSX flights, rideshare, Avis or Budget rentals and Instacart (the Instacart credit ends on 31 December 2027). Count only the ones you already spend on. If you would never book JSX or rent from Avis, those lines are worth nothing to you, however large the headline total.
The verdict
For a couple who fly United a few times a year, the Explorer is the better card: a free bag each, priority boarding and two lounge passes for $150, and nothing in the first year. Choose the Quest if you fly United often enough to use the $200 TravelBank cash every year and the second free bag. Then it costs about the same as the Explorer and gives more. If you want lounge access rather than passes, neither card is the right tool; see the best cards for lounge access.

United does not fly to Kathmandu, but miles can get you there on partner airlines, and the trek itself costs less than the flight. Annapurna Base Camp is nine days at $920 USD solo and Everest Base Camp is twelve days at $1,700 USD solo, including permits, a government-registered guide, a porter, teahouses and meals.
See the Everest Base Camp trek →Is the United Quest worth it over the Explorer?
Yes, if you buy at least one United ticket a year: its automatic $200 TravelBank cash offsets the $200 fee difference after the first year, and it adds a free second bag. The Explorer is better if you value its two yearly United Club passes or fly United only occasionally.
How many free bags do the United cards give?
The Explorer gives a free first checked bag and the Quest free first and second bags, each for you and one companion on the same reservation, when the ticket is bought with the card.
Does the United Quest include United Club access?
No. The Quest page shows no United Club passes. The Explorer includes two one-time passes a year.
What is United TravelBank cash?
A credit held in your United account and spent on United tickets. The Quest adds $200 every account year automatically; the Explorer adds $100 after $10,000 of spending in a year.
Do the United cards charge foreign transaction fees?
No. Neither the Explorer nor the Quest has a foreign transaction fee.
