Mardi Himal or Annapurna Base Camp, here’s which one actually fits your time and legs

Mardi Himal is the shorter, higher-viewpoint walk; Annapurna Base Camp is the longer, deeper one. Here is how to choose between them.

Choose Mardi Himal if you have four to seven days and want a ridge walk with big views. Choose Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) if you have nine days or more and want to walk into the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary. Both sit in the Annapurna Conservation Area and both start from Pokhara, so this really is a question of time, legs and appetite for altitude.

Key facts

  • Mardi Himal: our itineraries run 4 to 7 days, top viewpoint at roughly 4,500 m by most operator listings.
  • Annapurna Base Camp: 4,130 m, usually 7 to 12 days; our standard version is 9 days.
  • Both need the Annapurna Conservation Area permit, widely reported at about NPR 3,000 (roughly US$23) for foreigners.
  • Confirm permit and TIMS rules with your agency before you fly: published sources disagree on TIMS.

Which is shorter and easier?

Mardi Himal is shorter and, for most people, easier to fit into a holiday. You climb a single long ridge, sleeping in small lodges, and can be back in Pokhara in four to five days on the quick version. The last push to the high viewpoint is steep and exposed to wind, so short does not mean trivial.

Which goes higher?

Mardi Himal reaches the higher altitude, on a much shorter timetable. Operator listings put the top at about 4,500 m against 4,130 m at ABC, though the exact viewpoint figure varies by source. A fast Mardi itinerary gains height in fewer days, which is the real altitude risk: your body has less time to adjust. ABC, spread over more days, is gentler per day even though it ends lower.

Which has better views?

Mardi Himal gives you a ridge with Machapuchare, the Fishtail, almost within touching distance and a long panorama. ABC gives you the full ring of peaks, including Annapurna I, from a basin you walk into. If you want a postcard in four days, pick Mardi. If you want to feel surrounded, pick ABC.

What should you decide on?

Decide on days and altitude tolerance, not on fame. Under six days free, Mardi Himal is the honest answer; ABC squeezed into five or six days means long walking days and rushed altitude. If you can spare nine days, ABC is the richer trek, and you can even join the two in one longer itinerary.

Our verdict

Short on time or testing your first Himalayan trek: Mardi Himal, taken slowly with an acclimatisation night. Nine days or more and wanting the classic: Annapurna Base Camp. Do not pick Mardi purely because it looks easy; its altitude gain per day is the catch.

Who this suits and who it does not

Mardi Himal suits first-timers with limited leave, photographers who want ridge light, and anyone who dislikes crowded dining rooms. It does not suit people who need a gentle altitude profile or lots of lodge choice. ABC suits walkers with nine-plus days who enjoy a steady build to a big finish; it does not suit those who cannot spare the time. See our 4-day Mardi Himal trek or the 9-day Annapurna Base Camp trek, and check current trail and road conditions before booking, since autumn rain has disrupted roads across Nepal.
