Tsum Valley or the Manaslu Circuit, here’s which restricted-area trek to book
Both need guided restricted-area permits. Tsum Valley is slower and more cultural; the Manaslu Circuit crosses a high pass. Here is how to choose.

Pick the Tsum Valley if you want Buddhist villages, monasteries and no high pass; pick the Manaslu Circuit if you want a full loop over Larkya La at about 5,100 m and can handle the altitude. Both lie in restricted areas, so you cannot walk either without a licensed agency and a guide.

Key facts
- Manaslu Circuit restricted-area permit: widely reported at US$100 for the first seven days from September to November, plus US$15 a day after.
- Tsum Valley restricted-area permit: most guides report US$40 for the first week in September to November, plus US$7 a day; a few sources differ, so confirm with your agency.
- Our itineraries: Tsum Valley 16 days, Manaslu Circuit 14 or 16 days, both combined 19 days.
- Conservation area entry (MCAP) is reported at about NPR 3,000.
Which is harder?
The Manaslu Circuit is harder because of Larkya La, the pass at roughly 5,100 m that most trekkers cross in a long pre-dawn day. The Tsum Valley stays lower and avoids a pass entirely, which is why it suits people who want remoteness without a big altitude test. Both involve long days on narrow trails above the Buri Gandaki river.

| Factor | Tsum Valley | Manaslu Circuit |
|---|---|---|
| Our days | 16 | 14-16 |
| Biggest challenge | Long trail, remote lodges | Larkya La, about 5,100 m |
| Highlights | Monasteries, Tibetan-style villages | Pass crossing, Samagaun, mountain views |
| Guide required | Yes | Yes |
| Permit (Sep-Nov, reported) | US$40 first week | US$100 first week |
Which is better for culture?
The Tsum Valley is better for culture. It is a side valley near the Tibetan border, with Buddhist villages and monasteries, and the pace is slower. The Manaslu Circuit passes villages too, but its identity is the sweep of the loop and the pass.

Is the Manaslu Circuit safe right now?
Check before you book. After this autumn’s heavy rain, Nepal has seen landslides and road cuts, and trekkers were reported stranded on the Manaslu route; see our earlier report on the Samagaun situation. Road access to the trailhead can change within days, so ask your agency for the current status and build in spare days. Never rely on a fixed itinerary in a disrupted season.

Can you do both?
Yes, as one 19-day trek, but it is a big commitment. If you have fewer than two and a half weeks, choose one. The combined trek is the right answer for people who want the full Manaslu experience and have the acclimatisation time.

Our verdict
If altitude worries you or culture is the draw, book the Tsum Valley. If you have trekked above 4,000 m before and want a proper pass crossing, book the Manaslu Circuit. If neither fits comfortably, the honest answer may be a lower trek such as the Annapurna region, which has more lodges and fewer permit requirements.
Who this suits and who it does not
Tsum Valley suits curious, steady walkers with about two weeks. It does not suit anyone expecting comfort; lodges are basic. The Manaslu Circuit suits fit trekkers with some altitude experience; it does not suit first-timers or anyone with a short schedule. See our 16-day Tsum Valley trek and 14-day Manaslu Circuit trek. Permit fees above come from published guides, not a single official schedule, so we confirm the exact figure at booking.
