Both treks explore the Khumbu, but Everest Base Camp and the Gokyo Lakes offer very different experiences. This guide compares the views, crowds, difficulty, and scenery to help you choose — or combine them.
- Choose Everest Base Camp if the bucket-list pilgrimage to the foot of the world's highest mountain is what you came for.
- Choose Gokyo Lakes if you want the better panorama (four 8,000m peaks from Gokyo Ri), turquoise lakes, and far fewer trekkers.
- Choose both via the Cho La pass if you have 18+ days and the fitness for the complete Khumbu.
- Both are strenuous 12–14 day high-altitude treks reaching similar elevations — neither is easy.
Two ways to experience Everest
The Everest region offers two classic treks: the iconic Everest Base Camp (EBC) and the quieter, lake-studded Gokyo Lakes. Both are spectacular; they suit different trekkers.

The views
Counterintuitively, you cannot actually see Mount Everest's summit well from Base Camp itself — the view there is of the Khumbu Icefall. The classic Everest view on the EBC trek comes from Kala Patthar (5,545m). On the Gokyo side, Gokyo Ri (5,357m) arguably offers the better panorama — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu (four 8,000m peaks) in one sweep, above the turquoise lakes.
If your single goal is the widest Himalayan panorama, Gokyo Ri delivers four of the world's six highest peaks in one view — something Kala Patthar cannot match.
The experience
EBC: The bucket-list pilgrimage. You stand at the foot of the world's highest mountain, walk through Namche, Tengboche, and the famous trail to Base Camp. Busier, especially in peak season.
Gokyo: Quieter and more serene — a chain of six glacial lakes, the vast Ngozumpa glacier (the Himalaya's longest), and far fewer trekkers. A more contemplative journey.
Difficulty
Both are strenuous high-altitude treks of 12–14 days reaching similar altitudes. Gokyo is slightly less trafficked and some find the acclimatisation profile gentler, but neither is easy.
Both treks cross 5,300m+. Build in proper acclimatisation days and never ascend with symptoms of altitude sickness, regardless of which route you pick.
Why not both?
The ultimate option is to combine them via the Cho La pass (5,420m), linking Gokyo and EBC into one loop — or go further with the full Three Passes trek. This gives you the lakes, Base Camp, Kala Patthar, and Gokyo Ri in a single epic journey of 18+ days.
The verdict
Choose EBC for the icon and the pilgrimage. Choose Gokyo for the best panorama, the lakes, and the solitude. Choose both (via Cho La) if you have the time, fitness, and want the complete Khumbu.

Can you see Everest from Everest Base Camp?
Not well — the summit is largely hidden from Base Camp itself, where the view is of the Khumbu Icefall. The classic Everest view comes from Kala Patthar (5,545m), climbed on the EBC trek.
Which trek is less crowded, EBC or Gokyo?
Gokyo Lakes is considerably quieter and more serene, with far fewer trekkers than the busy EBC trail, especially in peak season.
