Some mountains are famous because they are beautiful. A handful are famous because of how many people never come home from them. The peaks on this list belong to the second group — the deadliest mountains in the world, ranked not by how tall they are but by how likely a climber is to die trying to reach the summit.
This is a sobering subject, and we treat it that way. Every statistic below represents real people — climbers, guides, and porters — who died in the high mountains. Our aim is not to sensationalise those losses but to explain them honestly: what the recorded fatality figures actually are, why each mountain is so lethal, and where the danger really lives. And because we are a Nepal trekking company that has walked beneath these giants for more than fifteen years, we end with the part most articles leave out — the enormous, reassuring gap between climbing an 8,000-metre peak and simply trekking to its base.
Death rate vs. death toll: reading the numbers honestly
Before the ranking, one distinction matters more than any other. "Deadliest" can mean two very different things:
- Death toll — the total number of people who have died on a mountain. By this measure Everest leads, simply because tens of thousands of people have attempted it.
- Death rate (fatality-to-summit ratio) — how many climbers die compared with how many reach the top. By this measure, Everest is far from the worst. The truly savage peaks are the ones almost nobody climbs.
Serious mountaineers rank danger by rate, using records kept by The Himalayan Database — the definitive archive of expeditions in the Nepal Himalaya, founded on the work of the late Elizabeth Hawley. The figures below draw on that database and other reputable mountaineering sources. Fatality ratios shift year to year as more climbers summit, so treat every number as approximate and "as recorded," not fixed forever.

Now the story behind each one.
1. Annapurna I — the highest death rate of any 8,000er
The tenth-highest mountain on Earth is, by fatality ratio, the most lethal of them all. According to the Himalayan Database, as of early 2025 Annapurna I had recorded roughly 75 deaths against about 559 successful ascents — a rate near 13%. That already sounds grim, but the historic figure was far worse: for decades Annapurna's fatality-to-summit ratio hovered around 32%, meaning nearly one climber died for every three who reached the top. The rate has fallen only because modern summiting has become more common — the mountain itself is no safer.
What makes Annapurna so deadly is not technical difficulty alone but objective hazard — danger you cannot climb around. Its slopes are laced with unstable seracs and avalanche-prone faces that release without warning, day or night, on the sleeping and the climbing alike. It was the first 8,000-metre peak ever summited, by Maurice Herzog's French team in 1950, and even that triumph ended in frostbite, amputations, and a desperate retreat. Annapurna has never stopped extracting that kind of price.

2. K2 — "the Savage Mountain"
At 8,611 metres, K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth and, for most mountaineers, the hardest and most feared of all the 8,000ers. Its recorded death rate has fallen sharply in recent years — from around 25% before 2021 to roughly 13–14% by 2024, after unusually large commercial seasons pushed the summit count up — but that improvement hides how unforgiving the mountain remains. Around 96 climbers have died on its flanks.
K2 is savage because everything about it is steep, technical, and exposed. There is no easy route and no straightforward descent. A notorious ice cliff — "the Bottleneck" — hangs over the final push, and above 8,000 metres a helicopter rescue is effectively impossible. When a storm traps climbers high on K2, they are on their own. The disasters of 1986 and 2008 remain among the darkest chapters in climbing history.
3. Nanga Parbat — the Killer Mountain
Nanga Parbat (8,126 m), the western anchor of the Himalaya in Pakistan, earned its nickname the hard way: 31 climbers died on it before anyone reached the summit in 1953. Its modern fatality rate sits around 20%, placing it firmly among the three deadliest 8,000ers by ratio. The mountain's Rupal Face is the highest mountain wall on the planet — a vertical mile and more of rock, ice, and avalanche terrain — and its sheer scale generates its own violent, fast-moving weather.
Nanga Parbat was also the site of a 2013 tragedy at base camp that had nothing to do with climbing, a reminder that risk in these ranges is never only about the mountain. Still, its reputation rests on the storms and avalanches that have swept its enormous faces for a century.
4. Kangchenjunga — the remote giant
The world's third-highest mountain (8,586 m), straddling the Nepal–India border, has recorded around 53 deaths against roughly 568 summits — a fatality rate near 10–11%. Kangchenjunga's danger is its combination of extreme altitude and profound remoteness: it is far from roads, help, and rescue, and its long, avalanche-swept ridges leave climbers exposed for days. Out of respect for local belief, many climbers traditionally stop a few steps below the true summit, leaving the very top untrodden.
5. Dhaulagiri — the white mountain
Dhaulagiri (8,167 m) means "dazzling white mountain," and it is one of the most avalanche-prone of all the giants, with a recorded fatality rate above 10%. Rising in near-isolation above the deep Kali Gandaki gorge, it offers little shelter from wind or slide. Its remoteness and sustained exposure keep it in the highest-risk band of 8,000-metre peaks, even as it draws far fewer climbers than Everest.
6. Manaslu — beauty with a violent temper
Manaslu (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world, has become a popular "first 8,000er" for commercial expeditions — and that popularity has a cost. Its historic fatality rate ran as high as 17–18% in older records and sits nearer 10% today. The killer here is avalanche: a 2012 slide swept climbers from their tents and killed eleven, and further avalanches in 2022 caused more deaths. The same slopes that make Manaslu a relatively achievable summit also load and release enormous volumes of snow.
The good news, and the theme of this article, is that the Manaslu Circuit trek that loops around this peak is one of the most rewarding walking routes in Nepal — and shares almost none of the summit's danger.
7. Mount Everest — the deadliest by total toll, not by rate
Everest (8,849 m) is the mountain everyone pictures when they think of climbing death, and it has indeed claimed the highest total number of lives — roughly 340 or more as recorded through 2025, with an estimated 200 bodies still on the mountain, mostly above 8,000 metres. But its rate of death is comparatively low — under 1% of those who climb above base camp — and it has actually been falling: better forecasting, fixed ropes, bottled oxygen, and experienced Sherpa teams have made the standard route safer than it once was.
So why does Everest keep killing? Three reasons. First, the death zone above 8,000 metres, where there is roughly a third of the oxygen at sea level and the body is literally dying by the hour. Second, the descent — most deaths happen on the way down, when climbers are exhausted, out of oxygen, and out of daylight. Third, crowding: in 2019, a record 381 permits and a narrow weather window produced the infamous summit-ridge traffic jam, and eleven people died, many stuck in line in the death zone until their oxygen and strength ran out. The 2024 season recorded eight deaths. Everest doesn't need to be technically hard to be lethal — it just needs you to be too high, for too long, with too little air.
8. Denali — cold as a weapon
North America's highest peak (6,190 m) proves that a mountain doesn't need to be 8,000 metres to be dangerous. Denali has recorded more than 130 deaths since 1903, at a fatality rate around 1.6%. Its danger is its extreme sub-Arctic latitude: the air is thinner than the same altitude nearer the equator, and temperatures and storms rival anything in the Himalaya. Climbers haul heavy loads over weeks in brutal cold, and rescue is often impossible until the weather breaks. In mid-2026 the mountain claimed five lives in two weeks, including a climbing ranger.
9. The Matterhorn — the deadly icon of the Alps
The Matterhorn (4,478 m) is the most recognisable mountain in Europe, and one of the most consistently fatal. Since its first ascent in 1865 — a triumph that ended when four of the seven-man party fell to their deaths on the descent — an estimated 500 or more people have died on it, with several fatalities in a typical year. Its accessibility is precisely the problem: it draws large numbers of climbers, some underprepared, onto steep, loose rock where a single slip or a dislodged stone can be fatal. Warming summers now free more rockfall, and guides increasingly warn that classic routes are growing more dangerous, not less.
10. The Eiger North Face — "the Murder Wall"
At 3,967 metres the Eiger is not especially high, but its north face — the Nordwand — is one of the most storied and deadly walls in all of mountaineering, with at least 64 climbers killed on it since 1935. A concave 1,800-metre sweep of rock and ice, it funnels rockfall and stones onto anyone below and brews sudden, trapping storms. Its grim early history earned it the nickname "the Murder Wall." It remains a serious undertaking for elite alpinists only.
You don't have to climb them — you can stand beneath them
Here is the reassurance that every one of those fatality statistics is quietly begging you to hear: almost none of the danger on this page applies to trekking.
The deaths above happen in a world called mountaineering — roped climbers, crampons and ice axes, fixed lines, bottled oxygen, and the death zone above 8,000 metres where the human body cannot survive for long. That is a completely different activity from trekking to a base camp, which is essentially a long, spectacular walking holiday on well-trodden trails, sleeping in warm teahouse lodges, eating cooked meals, and topping out thousands of metres below where the killing begins.

Perhaps this article stirred the opposite instinct: not fear, but fascination. If you genuinely want to feel a summit under your boots, the answer is not to sign up for an 8,000er. It is to begin on an entry-level trekking peak with a qualified guide, real training, and margins for safety — mountains chosen precisely because they let a determined beginner learn the craft without the death-zone stakes.

The deadliest mountains in the world are deadly for real, specific reasons — avalanche, altitude, weather, exposure, and the simple, unnegotiable fact that above 8,000 metres the human body is running out of time. Those risks are carried by mountaineers who choose to accept them. They are not the risks of a Himalayan trekking holiday.
