Short version: renew your passport the moment it drops under a year of validity, not the week before you fly. As of 2026, a standard UK renewal takes around three weeks, and most countries — Nepal included — will not let you in unless your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date. Here is exactly what each service costs, how long it takes, and how to jump the queue if you have left it late.

Key facts
- Most destinations, Nepal included, require at least six months of passport validity on the day you arrive.
- UK standard online renewal costs £102 for the 34-page book and £116 for the 54-page frequent-traveller book, and currently takes about three weeks. By post the same books cost £115.50 and £129.50 (gov.uk passport fees, checked 3 October 2026); a 1-week Fast Track (£192) and a 1-day Online Premium service (£239.50) exist for emergencies. Gov.uk lists £192 and £239.50 for adults, and £156.50 for children on Fast Track (gov.uk urgent-passport fees, checked 3 October 2026).
- Processing times move with demand — check the official site (gov.uk) the day you apply, and never book non-refundable flights until your new passport is in your hand.
| Country / service | Routine | Expedited / fast track | Adult fee |
|---|---|---|---|
| UK — standard online | ~3 weeks | — | £102 |
| UK — 1-week Fast Track | — | ~1 week | £192 |
| UK — Online Premium | — | 1 day* | £239.50 |
*Premium: your passport is ready to collect roughly four hours after your in-person appointment, which can be booked from two days after you apply; adult renewals only. UK figures from gov.uk: passport fees (gov.uk/passport-fees) and urgent-passport fees (gov.uk/get-a-passport-urgently), both checked 3 October 2026.
United Kingdom: three services, three speeds
HM Passport Office runs three tiers. The standard online service is what most people use: £102 for a standard 34-page adult passport (£116 for the 54-page frequent-traveller book, or £115.50 if you apply on a paper form). gov.uk currently quotes around three weeks, but that figure climbs in spring and summer, so check the live turnaround before you pay.

If you are short on time, the 1-week Fast Track costs £192 for adults (£156.50 for children) and needs an in-person appointment, usually available the day after you apply. For a genuine emergency, the Online Premium service costs £239.50 and has your new passport ready to collect about four hours after your appointment — but it is for adult renewals only, not first passports or applications from abroad. Children's passports are cheaper throughout: £66.50 online for a standard book.

Expedited service is available for an additional fee and shaves weeks off the wait, and you can pay extra for faster return delivery.
The six-month rule
Here is the trap that catches even seasoned travellers: a passport can be "valid" and still get you turned away. Most countries — Nepal included — require at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date, and airlines routinely check this at the gate. If your passport expires in, say, four months, you effectively cannot travel to Nepal even though it has not run out yet. Count six months back from your trek's start date; if your passport crosses that line, renew now. For the full Nepal entry checklist — visa on arrival, fees and documents — see our Nepal visa guide.
How to renew fast if you have left it late
- UK: book the 1-week Fast Track or 1-day Premium appointment directly on gov.uk — skip third-party "fast passport" resellers, which just add a markup to submit the same government form.
- Both: apply online where possible, pay for tracked return delivery, and get your photo right the first time — a rejected photo is the single most common cause of delay.
Common mistakes that cost you weeks
- Forgetting the six-month rule and being denied boarding despite an in-date passport.
- Booking flights first, renewing second — always renew before you commit to non-refundable travel.
- Poor photos — wrong size, shadows, glasses or a smile can bounce the whole application.
- Too few blank pages — some countries need empty visa pages; Nepal stamps its on-arrival visa straight into your passport.
- A damaged passport — water damage or a loose cover means you must apply for a replacement, not a renewal, which takes longer.
Sort the passport early and the rest of the trip gets simple. Once yours is valid well past your return date, you are clear to plan the adventure itself — and if that adventure is a Himalayan trek, we handle the permits, guides and logistics on the ground in Nepal.
