Arrivals fell 9.6% in August while US visits ran at a record pace, up 6.1% for the year. One market explains almost the entire drop.

Japan took 3,098,900 visitors in August, 9.6% fewer than a year earlier — and the fall is almost entirely one country. Arrivals from mainland China dropped to 418,000 from 1,018,747, a decline of 59% in a single month. American arrivals went the other way: 197,400 in August, up 1.5%, and 2,305,300 over the first eight months of the year, up 6.1% on 2025 and the strongest pace on record. These are JNTO’s figures, and it labels the 2026 numbers preliminary estimates against definitive 2025 ones.

One market explains the whole story

Chinese arrivals are down 3.8 million this year, while Japan’s total is down only 758,000. That ratio is the thing worth understanding: the drop from one market was about five times the size of the overall decline, which means every other market combined grew by roughly three million visitors and absorbed most of the hit.

Why Chinese travel to Japan collapsed is not something the arrivals data can answer, and we are not going to guess at it. What the numbers do show is the scale: a market that supplied nearly one visitor in four last year now supplies about one in ten.

Americans are going in record numbers

The United States is the largest long-haul market and still growing. 2,305,300 Americans arrived in the first eight months of 2026, 132,268 more than the same period last year. August itself was almost flat at +1.5%, which is what a market at capacity looks like in peak season rather than a market losing interest.

The rest of the Americas moved harder in percentage terms: Mexico is up 28.0% for the year and Canada 7.0%. Among European markets, Italy rose 4.4% and Spain 10.5%, and Russia is up 22.1% from a small base.

What it actually means if you are booking Japan

Less pressure in the places Chinese group travel concentrated, and no relief at all in the places everyone else goes. This is the honest reading. Japan still took 27.6 million visitors in eight months. Kyoto in April is not going to feel empty because one market is down, and Korean and Taiwanese arrivals — up a combined 2.2 million this year — travel to many of the same cities.

Where it may show is in the volume-driven segments: duty-free retail, large coach itineraries and the hotels that filled with group tours. If you are travelling independently, expect the difference to be marginal, and book the famous places as far ahead as you always had to.

What this means for you

Do not plan a Japan trip on the assumption that it has emptied out — the total is down 2.7%, not 20%. Treat the headline as what it is: a very large change in one market, inside a year that is otherwise growing.
