Which US national parks are actually the busiest, by the Park Service’s own count

Great Smoky Mountains is the most visited national park in America, with 11,527,939 recreation visits in 2025 — more than twice the next one on the list. But the busiest place the Park Service runs is not a national park at all: the Blue Ridge Parkway took 16,533,753 visits, and Golden Gate National Recreation Area took 15,748,676. The whole system recorded 323,014,305 visits, which is about 8.8 million fewer than 2024, a fall of 2.7%. Twenty-six individual parks still set records.

The ten busiest places in the system

Six of the top ten are parkways, recreation areas, seashores and a memorial — not national parks. This is the single most misread statistic in American travel: the headline “most visited” list is dominated by places people drive through rather than destinations they plan a week around.

The parks people actually name

Yellowstone is not second, and has not been for years. Zion took 4,984,525 visits against Yellowstone’s 4,762,988 — a park a fifth of the size, absorbing more people. Below them the field is remarkably tight: Grand Canyon, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain and Acadia are separated by about 350,000 visits across four parks.

The Smokies’ dominance has a boring explanation that matters if you are planning: there is no entrance fee, and two major roads run through it. Visits and visitors are not the same measurement.

A year that fell and set records at the same time

Both things are true, and they are not contradictory. The system lost roughly 8.8 million visits while 26 individual parks hit their highest counts ever, along with 13,016,577 overnight stays. Big, road-accessible sites carry enough volume to move the national total on their own, so the headline can fall while dozens of parks get busier.

2025 also contained what the Park Service describes as a 43-day partial government shutdown, the longest ever, during which it says it worked to keep parks open. It has not published a figure for what that cost in visits, and neither will we.

What this means if you want an empty trail

The crowding is concentrated, so avoiding it is mostly a matter of choosing the tenth-busiest park instead of the second. Glacier took 3.1 million visits against Zion’s 5.0 million, on vastly more ground. The gap between a queue and a quiet morning is usually one park over and one hour earlier.

It is also worth knowing the scale you are comparing against when you look further afield. Zion absorbs close to five million people a year inside one canyon system. Sagarmatha National Park, which contains Everest, takes tens of thousands of foreign visitors in a year — two orders of magnitude fewer, spread over a trail network measured in weeks rather than afternoons.
