Lumbini: a Southeast Asian Buddhist's guide to the birthplace of the Buddha
For Thai, Singaporean and Malaysian Buddhists, Lumbini is the ultimate pilgrimage — the very place the Buddha was born. Here's how to visit it, paired with Kathmandu's great stupas.

Every Buddhist knows the four great pilgrimage sites of the Buddha's life. The first — his birthplace — is in Nepal. Lumbini, in the country's southern plains, is where Queen Maya Devi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama some 2,600 years ago, and for Buddhists across Southeast Asia it is the most meaningful journey of all. With Nepal actively welcoming ASEAN visitors in 2026, there has never been an easier time to make it.
Key facts
- Lumbini is the birthplace of the Buddha and a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Home to the sacred Maya Devi Temple and the Ashoka Pillar
- SEA nationals get a simple visa on arrival in Nepal
- Pairs naturally with Kathmandu's great stupas, Boudhanath and Swayambhunath
What you will find at Lumbini
The sacred garden at Lumbini centres on the Maya Devi Temple, which shelters the exact spot traditionally marked as the Buddha's birthplace, beside the pool where Queen Maya is said to have bathed and the ancient Ashoka Pillar that records the emperor's pilgrimage here in 249 BCE. Around the garden, monasteries built by Buddhist nations from across the world — Thailand, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, China, Korea and more — form an extraordinary international monastic park. It is serene, walkable, and deeply moving.
| Site | Significance |
|---|---|
| Lumbini | Birthplace of the Buddha |
| Boudhanath (Kathmandu) | One of the world's largest stupas |
| Swayambhunath (Kathmandu) | Ancient hilltop "Monkey Temple" stupa |
| Namo Buddha | Revered hilltop monastery near Kathmandu |
How to make the journey
Most Southeast Asian pilgrims fly into Kathmandu — direct from Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, easily connected from Singapore, Jakarta and Manila — and combine the Kathmandu Valley's great Buddhist stupas with a trip down to Lumbini. Lumbini has its own airport at nearby Bhairahawa, and road and air links from Kathmandu and Pokhara make a combined cultural circuit straightforward. The visa is issued on arrival, removing the last bit of friction.
