World of Hyatt vs IHG Premier, and which free night is easier to use

Two Chase cards under $100, each with an anniversary free night. Hyatt caps it by hotel category, IHG by points you can top up. Your chain decides.

Choose the World of Hyatt card if there is a Hyatt you would actually stay at, because its free night is capped by hotel category rather than points; choose the IHG One Rewards Premier if you stay with IHG brands more often, or want Platinum Elite status and statement credits for $4 more. Both are Chase cards, both cost under $100 and both give a free night every anniversary. The Hyatt card costs $95, the IHG Premier $99. Every figure below was read on Chase’s card pages and Pricing & Terms on 27 September 2026.

Key takeaways
  • The chain you stay with decides this, not the card. A free night at a hotel you never visit is worth nothing.
  • Hyatt’s night is capped by category, IHG’s by points. IHG lets you add your own points to reach a pricier hotel.
  • Hyatt can give two free nights a year; the second needs $15,000 of spending.
  • IHG carries more extras: higher automatic status, a Global Entry credit and small United and Instacart credits.

Do not compare the points numbers across the two columns. A Hyatt point and an IHG point buy very different amounts of hotel, which is why IHG can print 140,000 and Hyatt 60,000 for offers that are not as far apart as they look. Price the nights you would book in each programme instead.

How the two free nights differ

Hyatt’s free night is good at any Category 1–4 hotel regardless of its points price that night; IHG’s is good at any hotel up to 40,000 points, and you can add your own points to go higher.

A category cap does not depend on how many points the hotel is charging that night. A points cap does, but IHG’s top-up rule softens that, because a hotel priced at 50,000 points is still reachable with 10,000 of your own. The Hyatt card also has the only second night here, after $15,000 of spending in a calendar year, which makes it the better card for someone who puts a lot of everyday spending on it. Remember that IHG’s night must be used within 12 months.

The free night test

For both cards the test is simple: is there a hotel you would book once a year for more than about $95 to $99? We do not put a dollar value on points or free nights, because it depends entirely on the hotel you choose.

Look up two or three Hyatt Category 1–4 hotels and two or three IHG hotels at or below 40,000 points in places you actually travel, and compare their cash price with the fee. For many travellers, the chain with a hotel in their home city, or in the city their family lives in, wins by default. Hyatt has the smaller footprint of the two, so if you often travel somewhere without one, the IHG card is safer.

What IHG adds for $4

The IHG Premier gives Platinum Elite status and a handful of credits that the Hyatt card does not have. The Global Entry, PreCheck or NEXUS credit is worth up to $120 every four years if you need one. The United TravelBank credit is $25 twice a year after registration, and the Instacart credit needs a paid Instacart+ membership. Count each at what you would really use. The $100 credit and 10,000 points after $20,000 of spending only matter to people who put a lot on the card.

The Hyatt card’s extras are night credits towards Hyatt status: 5 a year, plus 2 for every $5,000 you spend. For a Hyatt loyalist trying to reach a higher tier, that is the more useful benefit.

The verdict

Pick the card for the chain you stay with. If you have a real choice, the Hyatt card has the better free night and the only second night; the IHG Premier has the better status and extras. A traveller who stays in big cities and wants a certificate that keeps its value should lean Hyatt. A traveller whose regular destinations have an IHG hotel and no Hyatt should lean IHG. A free night in Kathmandu, then the trail

Use the free night at the start of the trip and let the trek take care of the rest. Annapurna Base Camp is nine days at $920 USD solo and Everest Base Camp is twelve days at $1,700 USD solo, including permits, a government-registered guide, a porter, teahouses and meals.

Is the World of Hyatt card better than the IHG Premier?

For the free night, usually yes, because it is capped by hotel category rather than points and a second night is available after $15,000 of spending. The IHG Premier has better automatic status and more statement credits. The right one is the chain you stay with.

Can I top up the IHG anniversary free night?

Yes. The IHG Premier free night covers hotels up to 40,000 points, and you can add your own points to use it at a hotel priced higher. It must be used within 12 months.

Where can I not use the Hyatt free night?

The Category 1–4 free night is not valid at Miraval, Hyatt Zilara or Hyatt Ziva properties.

What status do the Hyatt and IHG cards give?

The World of Hyatt card gives Discoverist. The IHG Premier gives Platinum Elite, and Diamond after $40,000 of spending in a calendar year.

Do the Hyatt and IHG cards charge foreign transaction fees?

No. Neither card has a foreign transaction fee.
