Choose the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless if you want a cheap yearly free night at Marriott; choose the Brilliant only if Platinum Elite status and its dining credit are worth $555 a year more to you. The Boundless costs $95 and gives a free night up to 35,000 points every account anniversary. The Brilliant costs $650 and gives a free night up to 85,000 points, automatic Platinum Elite, 25 Elite Night Credits and a dining credit of up to $25 a month. Every figure below was read on the Chase and American Express card and terms pages on 27 September 2026.

- Both cards give a yearly free night; the Brilliant’s can be used at far more expensive hotels.
- Platinum Elite is what the extra money mainly buys. If Marriott status does not matter to you, the Boundless wins easily.
- The Brilliant’s dining credit is monthly. $25 a month adds up to $300 only if you use it every month.
- The Brilliant’s current welcome offer ends on 30 September 2026. Check Amex’s page for its replacement before you apply.

What the extra $555 buys
Three things: Platinum Elite status, a free night that stretches to 85,000 points instead of 35,000, and up to $300 of dining credit.
The dining credit is the only part with a fixed cash value, and it only reaches $300 if you use $25 at a restaurant every single month. Count it at what you would really spend. The Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis property credit, the Global Entry or PreCheck credit and Priority Pass enrolment are worth something only to travellers who would use them. Note that from 19 May 2026 the Brilliant’s terms say Priority Pass guest visit fees may be charged automatically to your card, so bringing a guest into a lounge can cost money.
What remains is status. Platinum Elite is a tier guests otherwise earn by staying many nights a year, and the Brilliant gives it to you as a card benefit. If that matters to you, the Brilliant is the only card that does it. If you have never noticed what tier you are, it is worth very little.
Holding both cards does not give you 40 Elite Night Credits. Marriott’s terms say credits from different Marriott cards are not stackable, so pick one.
The free night test
Ask whether you would pay each card’s fee in cash for one night at the hotel its free night can buy. We do not put a dollar value on points or nights, because the same 35,000-point night can be a bargain in one city and an average room in another.
The Boundless passes this test for almost anyone who stays at Marriott once a year: $95 for a night up to 35,000 points. The Brilliant’s 85,000-point night opens much more expensive hotels, but the question is harder. Would you pay $650 for that night, less the dining credit you would really use? For a guest who books a smart city hotel or a resort every year, often yes. For someone who stays near the airport before an early flight, almost never.
The welcome offers
The Boundless offers three free nights of up to 50,000 points each after $3,000 in three months; the Brilliant’s current offer ends on 30 September 2026. Three nights up to 50,000 points is an unusually concrete offer: you can price three nights at a hotel you would book and see exactly what it is worth to you. For the Brilliant, look at Amex’s page for the offer that replaces the current one. Before either, check the rules that decide whether you get the bonus, and read the eligibility section of each card, because Marriott and its two issuers limit who can earn a welcome offer when they already hold, or recently held, another Marriott card.rsquo;s terms, which can rule out people who hold or recently held a related card.
The verdict
For most Marriott guests the Boundless is the right card: $95, a free night every anniversary and a welcome offer you can value in real hotel nights. Choose the Brilliant only if Platinum Elite status matters to you and you would use the dining credit every month; then its larger free night can make it the better deal for a guest who books expensive hotels. If you stay at several chains, our hotel card comparison sets the Marriott cards against Hilton, Hyatt and IHG, and the Amex Platinum gives Marriott Gold status as one of many benefits.

Only if you value Platinum Elite status and will use the $25 monthly dining credit. For a yearly free night alone, the $95 Boundless is far better value.

The Boundless anniversary free night is up to 35,000 points. The Brilliant’s yearly free night is up to 85,000 points. The Boundless welcome offer nights are up to 50,000 points each.
Can I hold both the Boundless and the Brilliant?
You can, but Elite Night Credits from different Marriott cards do not add together, and each cardElite Night Credits from different Marriott cards do not add together, and issuers limit welcome offers for people who hold or recently held another Marriott card.rsquo;s terms set their own welcome-offer eligibility rules, so read them before applying for the second.
