Best hotel credit cards 2026, and the free night that pays the fee
The right hotel card pays its fee with one free night a year. We compare ten Hilton, Marriott, Hyatt and IHG cards on the night, the status and the catch.

The best hotel credit card is the one whose yearly free night you would genuinely use at a hotel that costs more than the card’s fee. For most people who stay with one chain a few times a year, that is a mid-priced card: the World of Hyatt card, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless or the IHG One Rewards Premier, each around $95 to $99 a year with a free night every anniversary. If you stay with no chain in particular, a hotel card is the wrong tool, and a general travel card will serve you better. Every figure below was read on the issuer’s own card and terms pages on 27 September 2026.

- The free night is the whole case. Keep a hotel card only if one night a year at a hotel you would book anyway is worth more than the fee.
- Hyatt’s night is capped by hotel category, Marriott’s and IHG’s by points, and Hilton’s has no points cap at all.
- Several free nights are not automatic. Hilton Surpass and Marriott Bevy only give one after $15,000 of spending in a year.
- Two Marriott Amex welcome offers end on 30 September 2026. Check the current offer before you apply.
The free night test
Ask one question before any hotel card: would you pay the annual fee in cash for one night at the kind of hotel the free night covers? If the answer is yes, the card pays for itself before you count a single point, and the points and status are a bonus. If the answer is no, because you rarely stay with that chain or the hotels near you are cheap, the free night is worth less than the fee and the card costs you money every year.
We deliberately do not put a dollar value on points or free nights. A night capped at 35,000 points can be worth $150 in one city and $400 in another, so the only honest valuation is the price of the hotel you would actually book. Look up two or three hotels you would use, check their cash price, and compare it with the fee. For the general version of this maths, see is a travel credit card annual fee worth it.
The ten cards side by side
| Card | Annual fee | Yearly free night | Automatic status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hilton Honors American Express | $0 | None | Silver |
| Hilton Honors Surpass (Amex) | $150 | Only after $15,000 spend in a year | Gold |
| Hilton Honors Aspire (Amex) | $550 | Every year, no points cap | Diamond |
| Marriott Bonvoy Bold (Chase) | $0 | None | Silver Elite |
| Marriott Bonvoy Boundless (Chase) | $95 | Every anniversary, up to 35,000 points | Silver Elite |
| Marriott Bonvoy Bevy (Amex) | $250 | Only after $15,000 spend, up to 50,000 points | Gold Elite |
| Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant (Amex) | $650 | Every year, up to 85,000 points | Platinum Elite |
| World of Hyatt (Chase) | $95 | Every anniversary, Category 1–4 hotel | Discoverist |
| IHG One Rewards Traveler (Chase) | $0 | None | Silver Elite |
| IHG One Rewards Premier (Chase) | $99 | Every anniversary, up to 40,000 points (you can top up with your own points) | Platinum Elite |
None of the ten charges a foreign transaction fee. The American Express cards list a purchase APR of 19.74% to 28.74% variable; the Chase cards are in a similar range. Any of them becomes expensive fast if you carry a balance.
Best overall value: the World of Hyatt card
For $95 a year the Hyatt card gives a free night at a Category 1–4 hotel every cardmember anniversary, and a second one after $15,000 of spending in a calendar year. Because the night is capped by hotel category rather than by a points price, it keeps its value as long as you have a Category 1–4 Hyatt you want to stay in. It earns 4X at Hyatt, 2X at restaurants, on airline tickets bought direct, local transit and commuting, and fitness clubs, and 1X on everything else. The trade-off is Hyatt’s smaller footprint: if there is no Hyatt where you travel, choose a bigger chain’s card. The free night is not valid at Miraval, Hyatt Zilara or Hyatt Ziva.
The welcome offer on 27 September was up to 60,000 points: 30,000 after $3,000 in three months, plus an extra point per dollar on 1X purchases for six months, on up to $15,000.
Best for Marriott: the Bonvoy Boundless
The Boundless costs $95 and gives a free night up to 35,000 points every account anniversary. It earns 6X at Marriott Bonvoy hotels, 3X on the first $6,000 a year of combined grocery, gas and dining, and 2X on everything else, and it adds 15 Elite Night Credits a year plus one for every $5,000 you spend. Silver Elite is automatic, with Gold after $35,000 of spending in a year.
Its welcome offer is unusual: three Free Night Awards, each worth up to 50,000 points, after $3,000 in three months. There is also a limited-time airline credit of up to $100 through June 2027. If you want Marriott status rather than a cheap free night, the Bonvoy Brilliant ($650) adds Platinum Elite, a free night up to 85,000 points and a $300 yearly dining credit paid at up to $25 a month. Its welcome offer, 150,000 points plus a $250 statement credit after $6,000 in six months, ends on 30 September 2026. Elite Night Credits from different Marriott cards do not add together.
Best for IHG: the One Rewards Premier
For $99 the IHG Premier gives an anniversary free night up to 40,000 points and automatic Platinum Elite status. You can add your own points to use the night at a hotel priced above 40,000, which makes it more flexible than a hard cap. It earns 10X at IHG, 5X on travel, dining and gas, and 3X on everything else, and it credits up to $120 every four years for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck or NEXUS. The welcome offer on 27 September was 140,000 points after $3,000 in three months, plus 10,000 for adding an authorized user.

Best with no annual fee
If you stay with a chain only occasionally, a no-fee card earns you points and low-tier status without any risk. None of the three gives an ongoing free night.
- Hilton Honors American Express: 7X at Hilton, 5X at US restaurants, US supermarkets and US gas stations, 3X on everything else, and Silver status. Its welcome offer of 70,000 points plus a Free Night Reward after $2,000 in six months runs to 13 January 2027.
- IHG One Rewards Traveler: 5X at IHG, 3X on dining, utilities, select streaming and gas, 2X on everything else, and the fourth night free on award stays of four nights or more.
- Marriott Bonvoy Bold: 3X at Marriott hotels, 2X at grocery stores, on rideshare, select food delivery, streaming and phone bills, and 5 Elite Night Credits a year.

Best premium hotel card: the Hilton Aspire
The Aspire costs $550 and returns more than most premium cards to a Hilton regular. It gives top-tier Diamond status, a free night every year with no points cap, and a further free night after $30,000 of spending, and again after another $30,000. Its credits are up to $400 a year at Hilton resorts ($200 each half-year), up to $200 a year on flights ($50 a quarter) and up to $219 for CLEAR+. It earns 14X at Hilton and 7X on select travel and US restaurants. The welcome offer on 27 September was 200,000 points after $6,000 in six months.
The mid-tier Surpass ($150) gives Gold status and up to $200 a year in Hilton credits ($50 a quarter), but its free night needs $15,000 of spending in a year. If you want Hilton and Marriott status without a hotel card at all, the Amex Platinum includes Hilton Gold and Marriott Gold, though at $895.
Free nights expire: Hilton’s and IHG’s must be used within 12 months of being issued, so plan the stay before the anniversary comes round, and check the expiry on any other card’s night. Some are earned only through spending (Surpass and Bevy at $15,000). And Hilton’s nights cover a standard room at almost any Hilton hotel, but the terms exclude a list of properties, so check before you plan a trip around one.
Hotel card or general travel card?
A hotel card only makes sense if you already return to one chain. If you mix chains, book independent guesthouses or travel somewhere the big brands are thin on the ground, a general travel card that earns points you can use anywhere is better; our best travel credit cards by traveller type and the complete guide to travel cards cover those. Before applying for any of these cards for the welcome offer, check the rules that decide whether you get the bonus.
Kathmandu and Pokhara are the two cities where a hotel night fits around a trek, and both are where our trips start. Annapurna Base Camp is nine days at $920 USD solo and Everest Base Camp is twelve days at $1,700 USD solo, including permits, a government-registered guide, a porter, teahouses and meals.
