How much Americans actually spend on a trip to Spain, against everyone else

An American tourist spent an average of €2,297 on a trip to Spain in 2025, more than a visitor from any other country Spain’s statistics office reports on individually. That is 65% above the average visitor’s €1,392, and nearly double what a British visitor spends. Across the year Americans spent €10.23 billion in Spain, up 13.5% on 2024, at €294 a day for trips averaging 7.8 days. One thing to know before reading anything into it: INE counts the international flight as part of a trip’s spending, so a transatlantic ticket is inside that €2,297. The British, who arrive in far greater numbers, still spend the most in total.

Per trip, Americans come first

Of the ten countries INE breaks out on their own, the United States tops the per-trip ranking by a clear margin. Only two catch-all groups sit above it: “rest of the Americas” at €2,416 and “rest of the world” at €2,385. Every market at the top of this table is long-haul, and that is not a coincidence: Egatur includes international transport, and packages that bundle it, in the spending it measures.

So read the comparison with the flight in mind. Americans and Germans stay the same length of time — about 7.8 days — and Americans spend €294 a day against the Germans’ €170. A German can reach Spain on a short, cheap flight; an American is paying for the Atlantic, and that cost is spread across every one of those days. INE does not split the flight out by country, so how much of the €124-a-day gap it accounts for cannot be read from these figures.

In total, the British still win easily

Volume beats spend per head. The British spent €23.7 billion in Spain in 2025, more than twice the American total, on a per-trip spend barely more than half as large. Germany (€15.9 billion) and France (€11.6 billion) also finish ahead of the United States in total.

American spending is growing fast, though: up 13.5% in 2025, on top of 16.1% in 2024.

What it means if you are planning Spain

€294 a day is not what Spain costs on the ground — it includes getting there. Strip the flight out and the daily spend on hotels, food and everything else is lower, though INE’s published figures do not say by how much for Americans. What you can control once you land is the usual set of choices: hotels over apartments, the Barcelona and Madrid centres over smaller cities, the peak summer weeks over the shoulders.
