Thailand visa-free stays just changed, and what it means for American travellers
Since 15 September, Americans get 30 days visa-free instead of 60, and every visitor must file a free digital arrival card in the three days before landing.

Since 15 September, a US passport gets 30 days in Thailand without a visa, down from 60. The change applies to 60 countries, the United States among them, and replaced the 60-day exemption, which ended the same day. It was approved by the Cabinet on 14 July, signed on 26 August and published in the Royal Gazette on 31 August, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand. For most American holidays it changes nothing, because most holidays are shorter than a month. For anyone using Thailand as a long base, or crossing a land border to reset the clock, it changes a lot.

What changed on 15 September
The length of the stay halved, and the land border became a limited resource. The Ministry of Interior replaced one generous category with a tighter set.

The same announcements gave Seychelles and Mauritius a 15-day exemption and added Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia to the visa-on-arrival list. The land-border limit has exceptions for neighbours including Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore.
Why Thailand did it
The government cited security as well as tourism. The Interior Ministry said the list was revised to reflect current circumstances, weighing “national security and economic considerations as well as the promotion of tourism”. The twice-a-year cap on land entries targets something specific: the “visa run”, where long-stay visitors cross into a neighbouring country and back to restart their allowance.
The official announcement does not say anything about extending a stay, or how people who entered before 15 September are treated. If either affects you, ask Thai immigration directly rather than relying on anyone’s summary — including this one.
The form you need before you fly
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card is compulsory for every non-Thai visitor, and it is free on the official site. The Immigration Bureau requires all foreign nationals to complete it online before entry, and to submit it within the three days before they arrive. It is not a visa and it does not replace one.
The official site, run by the Immigration Bureau at tdac.immigration.go.th, advertises that it charges no fee. There are lookalike services online that will file it for you for money. You do not need them.
What it means for a typical American trip
A two- or three-week holiday is unaffected; a slow-travel winter is not. If you are flying in for a fortnight of Bangkok, the islands and Chiang Mai, you arrive, get 30 days and leave well inside them. The people this catches are the ones who planned a six-to-eight-week stay on the old rule, digital nomads basing themselves in Chiang Mai, and anyone who intended to hop to Laos or Cambodia by road to reset the clock more than twice this year.

What this means for you
Count your days against 30, not 60, from the date you land. File the arrival card yourself on the official site in the three days before you fly, and ignore anyone charging for it. If you planned a longer stay on the old rule, apply for the right visa before you travel rather than hoping to sort it out at the border — the border is exactly what the new rules were written to tighten.
