The best beginner treks in Nepal: where to start if you've never trekked
You don't need to start with Everest. Nepal has a ladder of gentle, jaw-dropping treks perfect for first-timers — short days, teahouse comfort, and views that will ruin you for ordinary holidays.

Here is the reassuring truth for anyone dreaming of Nepal but worried they are not "a trekker": you do not have to start at Everest Base Camp. Nepal has a whole ladder of beginner-friendly treks — short, lower, and gentle enough for a first-timer, yet delivering the kind of Himalayan views that change how you see the world. Here is where to start.
What makes a trek beginner-friendly
- Lower altitude — less impact from thin air
- Short days — typically 3–5 hours of walking
- Good teahouses close together
- Big payoff — sunrise peaks without the hardship
The best first treks
The classic first trek is Poon Hill (Ghorepani–Poon Hill) — just a few days, a famous sunrise over the Annapurnas and Dhaulagiri, and trails through rhododendron forest and Gurung villages. A short Annapurna Base Camp trek from Pokhara steps it up a little while staying very achievable. And Langtang Valley, close to Kathmandu, offers a quieter, beautiful introduction to high mountain country. Any of these will give you the full Himalayan experience — teahouses, dal bhat, snow peaks — without demanding mountaineer-level fitness.
| Trek | Days | Why start here |
|---|---|---|
| Ghorepani–Poon Hill | 3–5 | Short, famous sunrise |
| Short ABC from Pokhara | 5–7 | Into the mountains, still gentle |
| Langtang Valley | 7 | Quiet, close to Kathmandu |
| Poon Hill + Annapurna | 10 | A fuller first adventure |
