Among the 1,008 people who stood on top of Everest this spring, one stands out for the record she carried down. Emma Schwerin, a 17-year-old from Bozeman, Montana, became the youngest American woman ever to summit Everest — and in doing so completed the Seven Summits, the highest peak on each continent, as the youngest woman in history to finish them. She did it climbing alongside her father.

Key facts

  • Emma Schwerin, 17, of Bozeman, Montana
  • Youngest American woman to summit Everest
  • Youngest woman ever to complete the Seven Summits (17y, 2m, 24d)
  • Climbed with her father, Sam — a first father-daughter Seven Summits team

An eighteen-month quest

Emma's story began, fittingly, with a trek. Captivated as a schoolgirl by the story of the 1996 Everest disaster, she walked the 100-odd kilometres to Everest Base Camp — and came home determined to climb. In late 2023 she and her father Sam set out on the Seven Summits, and over roughly eighteen months they ticked them off one by one, finishing on the highest of them all.

What this means for you

Every great Himalayan climber starts the same way Emma did — by trekking into the mountains. The walk to Everest Base Camp is where the dream takes hold, and trekking peaks like Island Peak are where American climbers cut their teeth before the big objectives. You do not have to chase a record to follow her first footsteps; you just have to start.
