Everest's Icefall Blocked 400 Climbers for 19 Days. A Drone Mapped It in 3.5 Hours.

In April a collapsing wall of ice sealed every route to Everest's summit near the spot that killed 16 Sherpa guides in 2014. Months later, a drone did in one afternoon what usually takes weeks on foot.

On April 24, 2026, Nepal's Department of Tourism made it official: the Khumbu Icefall, the shifting river of ice between Everest Base Camp and Camp 1, was impassable. A wall of ice roughly the height of a nine-storey building had formed across the only viable line through the maze, and more than 400 climbers and their teams sat at Base Camp waiting, many having already paid $15,000 for a single permit. The route stayed sealed for 19 days. Four months later, the fastest way through turned out to be a drone.

Nepal's elite route-fixers, the Icefall Doctors, began work on March 16, threading ladders and fixed rope through the crevasses as they do every pre-monsoon season. By April 8 they had secured a line up to the rockfall point below the icefall's upper reaches. Days later, a fresh serac field calved across the only safe line ahead, and the section was declared impassable on April 24. It is not an abstract danger: on April 18, 2014, a serac broke loose from almost the same stretch of ice and killed 16 Nepali guides — the deadliest single accident on the mountain until the 2015 earthquake avalanche. Every metre of new ice through the Icefall is treated as a live threat, not a formality.

The SPCC, working with the Department of Tourism and the Expedition Operators Association of Nepal, ruled out a vertical route over the serac as too dangerous. A helicopter inspection on April 25, followed by a ground-level assessment on April 26, found a path below the serac through its centre. Icefall Doctors fixed eight ladders across three sections, and the route reopened on April 28 — a 19-day delay, one of the longest disruptions to a climbing season in recent years, according to the Kathmandu Post.

What happened next is where the story turns unusual. In a case study published on July 20, 2026, DJI and the Kathmandu-based drone company Airlift Technology described flying a DJI Matrice 4E over the same icefall — more than 3 square kilometres of it, above 6,000m, in temperatures below -20°C — to build a centimetre-accurate 3D model of every crevasse and serac in 3.5 hours. Airlift's CEO, Raj Bikram Maharjan, said the models let hazard-mapping teams “identify hazards and plan safe routes without first climbing through the icefall themselves.” The traditional method — Icefall Doctors walking the glacier on foot to scout a line — normally takes days to weeks of exposure to exactly the kind of collapse that closed the route in April.

What this means for trekkers

What this means for you

If you're trekking to Everest Base Camp rather than climbing beyond it, you never set foot in the Icefall yourself — it starts above Base Camp and is reserved for summit teams and their Sherpa crews. But the same standing infrastructure that fixes the Icefall each spring — the permit system, the SPCC, the Icefall Doctors — is what keeps the whole trekking corridor safe below it, and it is visibly getting better resourced, not worse. Drone mapping won't replace the Icefall Doctors' judgment, but it means fewer of them walk into an unstable section blind, and route delays like April's 19 days should, over time, get shorter rather than longer.
