If you have four days and have never trekked in your life, this is the one. Poon Hill hands you a Himalayan sunrise that stops your heart — without the altitude, the risk or the two-week commitment. It is the trek we put nervous first-timers, families and short-on-time travellers on — and, quietly, the one plenty of seasoned trekkers keep coming back to.

The sunrise that made it famous

You climb Poon Hill (3,210m) in the dark, head-torch on, and reach the top just before dawn. Then the show: the sun catches Dhaulagiri (8,167m) and the whole Annapurna range across the valley and lights them gold, one peak at a time, while you cradle a hot lemon tea. It is one of the great sunrises on Earth, and you barely had to suffer for it.

Why it’s the perfect first trek

Everything about Poon Hill is forgiving. It tops out at just 3,210m, so altitude sickness is essentially a non-issue. It starts a couple of hours’ drive from Pokhara — no nerve-wracking domestic flight. The teahouses are warm and comfortable, the villages friendly, and the walking, though it has its stone staircases, never asks more than a reasonably fit person can give. You get the full Himalayan teahouse experience in miniature.

What the four days look like

The classic 4-day Poon Hill itinerary
DayRoute
1Pokhara → drive to the trailhead → Tikhedhunga
2Climb through rhododendron forest to Ghorepani (2,860m)
3Pre-dawn Poon Hill sunrise → on to Ghandruk
4Descend through Gurung villages → drive back to Pokhara

Why the pros still love it

The honest verdict

Poon Hill gets dismissed as a “beginner’s trek,” and that misses the point. For the reward-to-effort ratio, almost nothing in the Himalaya beats it: four days, minimal risk, and a sunrise you will describe to people for years. Do it as a first trek, a warm-up before Everest, or a short escape on a tight schedule — it delivers every time.
