1. Everest Base Camp, Nepal — the best trek in Asia

No trek on the continent delivers what Everest Base Camp does: eight of the world’s fourteen 8,000–metre peaks within a day’s reach, a living Sherpa Buddhist culture in Namche and Tengboche, and the densest network of lodges, guides and helicopter rescue anywhere in high Asia. That last point matters more than romance — it is why we rank it first for a first big–altitude walk. The standard route tops out at Kala Patthar (5,545m) for the classic Everest sunrise, then retraces the Khumbu.

2. Annapurna Circuit, Nepal — the best value in Asia

If Everest is the icon, the Annapurna Circuit is the complete trek: subtropical rice terraces to the arid, Tibetan–flavoured Manang valley, over the 5,416m Thorong La and down into the medieval kingdom of Mustang. It crosses more terrain, culture and climate than almost any walk on Earth — and it does it for less money than any comparable route in Asia. The Annapurna region drew a record 177,000–plus trekkers in a recent ten–month span, and it remains our most–asked–about circuit.

Autumn (October–November) is prime; spring is quieter and greener.

3. Manaslu Circuit, Nepal — the connoisseur’s choice

Manaslu is what the Annapurna Circuit was thirty years ago: a genuine wilderness circuit around the world’s eighth–highest mountain, through Tibetan Buddhist villages and over the 5,106m Larke La, with a fraction of the foot traffic. As a restricted area it has always required a special permit and a licensed guide, which is precisely what keeps it quiet and pristine.

Why 2026: a real regulatory change — on 22 March 2026 Nepal’s Department of Immigration removed the two–trekker minimum across all restricted–area districts, Manaslu included. A single traveller can now buy the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit at the standard per–person rate. A licensed agency guide is still mandatory (that rule has not changed and never should), but the days of needing to find a second person to legally start are over.

4. Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal — the best short Himalayan trek

Not everyone has three weeks. Annapurna Base Camp is the answer: in under a week you walk into a glacial amphitheatre ringed by 7,000– and 8,000–metre peaks, sleeping at 4,130m beneath the sheer south face of Annapurna I. It is the highest–reward–per–day trek in Nepal and the one we recommend most for first–timers short on time.

Why 2026: spring paints the lower Modi Khola valley in rhododendron; October–November delivers the crispest sanctuary views. Because it stays below 4,200m it is far more forgiving on acclimatisation than the base–camp treks above.

5. Snowman & Druk Path, Bhutan

Bhutan gives you two ends of the spectrum. The Druk Path is a scenic five–day ridge walk between Paro and Thimphu, past high lakes and old dzongs — the ideal first Himalayan trek in a country that feels frozen in the best possible way. The Snowman Trek is the opposite: roughly 25 days across eleven passes above 4,500m along the Tibetan border, widely called one of the hardest treks on Earth, finishable only in a narrow mid–September to mid–October window.

Why 2026: Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee is held at USD $100 per person per night until August 2027, so 2026 is a comparatively affordable year to go before any future revision. 6. Kumano Kodo & the Northern Alps, Japan

Japan is Asia’s most refined trekking country, and it offers two very different classics. The Kumano Kodo is a network of UNESCO–listed pilgrimage trails through the forested Kii Peninsula, linking three grand shrines; complete it alongside Spain’s Camino de Santiago and you earn the coveted Dual Pilgrim certificate. For high alpine scenery, the Northern Alps around Kamikochi deliver granite spires and ridge huts to rival the Alps.

Why 2026: walk the Kumano Kodo in spring (late March–May) or autumn (late October–early December) to dodge the summer typhoon season. 7. Ala–Kul Lake, Kyrgyzstan

Central Asia’s breakout trekking destination, and deservedly so. The three– to four–day loop from Karakol climbs through spruce forest and summer jailoo pastures to a startling turquoise glacial lake at 3,560m, over a 3,900m pass and down to the hot springs of Altyn–Arashan. It has the scale of the Himalaya with almost none of the bureaucracy.

Why 2026: the pass is usually snow–free from mid–July, with August the warmest and September the quietest before the cold returns. 8. K2 Base Camp & Concordia, Pakistan

The most serious trek on this list, and for hardened walkers the most spectacular. The route up the Baltoro Glacier to Concordia — the “Throne Room of the Mountain Gods” — sits in a 360–degree amphitheatre of granite giants, with the base camps of K2, Broad Peak and the Gasherbrums within reach. Fairy Meadows below Nanga Parbat makes the classic add–on.

Why 2026: the Karakoram season is short and summer–only, roughly June to August, when the high glacier is passable. This is a restricted zone: you need a Pakistan trekking visa (distinct from the standard tourist visa) and a national–park entry fee in the region of $200, so it must be booked as a supported expedition. It belongs on any list of the best treks in the world, but it is not a first big trek — earn it on the Nepal routes above first.

9. Markha Valley, Ladakh, India

When the monsoon parks the Nepal and India foothill treks in July and August, Ladakh stays bone–dry in Tibet’s rain shadow. The Markha Valley traverse links Ladakhi villages, homestays and gompas beneath 6,000m peaks, crossing the Kongmaru La at 5,260m — a cultural, high–desert trek entirely unlike the green Himalaya.

Why 2026: the window is mid–June to mid–September, exactly when much of monsoon Asia is off–limits, making it the perfect summer–season Himalayan trek. It runs through Hemis National Park, so budget for the park fee and check the current permit position in Leh before you set out.

10. Kashmir Great Lakes, India

Often called the most beautiful trek in India, this week–long loop out of Sonamarg strings together a series of alpine lakes — Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar, Satsar — across high meadows and 4,000m passes. In peak season the colour is almost unreal.

Why 2026: the season is tight, July to September, with August and early September the most reliable. One important caveat for 2026: some operators have paused departures pending permit confirmation from the authorities, so verify the trek is running and permitted before you commit non–refundable flights.

11. Rinjani Summit, Indonesia

The 3,726m volcano crowning Lombok is one of Southeast Asia’s great summit treks: a punishing pre–dawn ascent of loose scree rewarded by a sunrise over the vast crater lake of Segara Anak. It is tougher than its two– to three–day length suggests.

Why 2026: Rinjani National Park is closed 1 January–31 March for the rainy season and officially reopens on 1 April 2026, with May–October the prime climbing months. Following recent safety reviews, a licensed guide, valid trekking insurance and an e–Rinjani permit are now mandatory for every trekker, and high–season permits are capped by a daily quota — book well ahead.

12. Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia

Borneo’s 4,095m granite monolith is the highest peak between the Himalaya and New Guinea, and its two–day ascent through cloud forest to a bare summit plateau is a bucket–list classic — with the option of the world’s highest via ferrata on the way down.

Why 2026: Sabah Parks issues only 163 climbing permits per day and requires a registered mountain guide for every climber, so this is the one Southeast Asian summit you cannot leave to chance — the 2026 booking window opened in December 2025 and popular dates go quickly. The driest, clearest months are broadly February to April.
