Trekking Nepal from Dubai in 2026: 4-hour direct flights, the best short treks for a week of leave, visa on arrival, and real costs in AED.

You can leave Dubai after breakfast and be watching the sun set on 8,000-metre peaks the next morning. Nepal is one of the few genuine adventure destinations that sits barely four hours from the Gulf — no jet lag worth the name, no long-haul dread, and a mountain range that makes the desert feel very far away. Yet most residents of the UAE, Qatar and Saudi think of it as a two-week expedition they can never fit around work.

They’re wrong. We’re a Pokhara-based, NMA-certified guide team (Est. 1998, 5,000+ treks led), and a large share of the trekkers we walk with now fly in from the Gulf on a single week of annual leave. This is our honest, first-party guide to doing Nepal from the UAE and the wider Gulf in 2026 — the direct flights, the visa, the short treks that actually fit a week off, and what it all costs in AED.

The verdict: Nepal is the most rewarding week-long escape in reach of the Gulf. Fly direct from Dubai, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi or Doha in about four hours, pick up a visa at the airport, and spend five to seven days on a short guided trek — Poon Hill, Ghandruk, Mardi Himal or a compact Annapurna Base Camp. If you have only a day or two, an Everest helicopter tour puts you face to face with the highest mountain on earth and back for dinner. Go in October–November or March–April; avoid the June–August monsoon unless you head to rain-shadow Mustang.

Getting there: direct flights from the Gulf to Kathmandu

This is Nepal’s great advantage for Gulf residents. Kathmandu (KTM) is a short-haul hop, not a long-haul slog. flydubai is the workhorse from Dubai with around 21 flights a week, joined by Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines; between them Dubai–Kathmandu runs dozens of times a week and takes a little over four hours. Sharjah has Air Arabia, Abu Dhabi has Etihad, and Doha has Qatar Airways — so wherever you are in the Gulf, you have a direct option.

Fly out early and you land in Kathmandu in the early afternoon with the whole day ahead. Because Nepal is only 1 hour 45 minutes ahead of UAE time (2h 45m ahead of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi), there is effectively no jet lag to shake off before you start walking.

Sharjah (SHJ)Air Arabia~4h
Abu Dhabi (AUH)Etihad Airways~4h 40m
Doha (DOH)Qatar Airways, Himalaya, Nepal Airlines~4h 20m

Return economy fares from the UAE typically run around AED 1,300–2,500 depending on season and how far ahead you book — cheapest outside the October and December peaks.

Do you need a visa for Nepal?

For almost everyone in the Gulf, the answer is simple: get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Fees are fixed by Nepal’s Department of Immigration — US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days, US$125 for 90 days — paid in cash (US dollars are easiest; carry the exact amount). Bring a passport valid for six months and a photo, though the airport kiosks can take one for you.

Two Gulf-specific notes that save real hassle:

Indian passport holders need no visa at all. Under the long-standing Nepal–India treaty, Indian citizens enter freely with no fee and no form — a big deal given the size of the Indian community across the UAE and Gulf. Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Sri Lankan, Bhutanese and Maldivian citizens receive a free 30-day “gratis” tourist visa once per calendar year.

A short list of nationalities cannot use visa on arrival and must apply in advance at a Nepali mission — including citizens of Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Somalia, Liberia, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe and Palestine. If that’s your passport, sort the visa before you fly. Full detail on our Nepal visa guide.

The best treks when you only have a week off

Here is where Gulf trekkers get it wrong: they assume Nepal means Everest Base Camp and two-plus weeks away. It doesn’t. The Annapurna region around Pokhara is built for shorter trips, and you can stand under giant peaks after just two or three days of walking. These are the routes we run most often for people flying in on limited leave — prices are per person, guided, land-only (add flights and visa above).

Our pick for a first week: a four-day Mardi Himal trek or a compact five-day Annapurna Base Camp. Both start and finish in Pokhara, both put you directly beneath the peaks, and both leave a day spare at each end for the flights. If it’s your very first trek, the gentle Ghorepani Poon Hill sunrise walk is the classic starter.

How high each trek takes you

Altitude is the real difference between these routes — it drives both the views and how your body copes. Here is where each short trek tops out.

Ghandruk 2,010 m
Poon Hill 3,210 m
Annapurna Base Camp 4,130 m
Mardi Himal 4,500 m
Everest Base Camp 5,364 m

Coming from sea-level Gulf cities, you have no altitude acclimatisation banked — which is exactly why a guided, properly paced itinerary matters more here than at home. Nobody arrives from Dubai already used to thin air.

When to go: matching Nepal’s seasons to Gulf leave

Nepal’s trekking calendar is almost the opposite of the Gulf’s instinct to travel in summer. The clearest mountains come in autumn and spring; the long Gulf summer break is Nepal’s monsoon. Plan around that and you’ll get the trip the photos promise.

SeasonNepal conditionsFor Gulf travellers
Oct–NovPeak season. Post-monsoon air, sharpest views, stable weather.Best of all. Lines up with cooler UAE weather and school half-terms.
Mar–AprSpring. Warm, rhododendron in bloom, long clear mornings.Excellent; often overlaps the Eid al-Fitr break for a longer trip.
Jun–AugMonsoon. Cloud, rain, leeches, flight delays in the hills.Gulf summer holidays — skip the high mountains; go to rain-shadow Upper Mustang instead.
Dec–JanDry and stable but cold and snowy up high.Great for lower treks, Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan over the winter break.

Two ways to do Nepal from the Gulf

The long-weekender

Two or three days, no altitude commitment. Land, do an Everest helicopter day tour, add a Kathmandu and Pokhara city stopover, fly home. You’ll stand within touching distance of Everest without a single hard day of walking — ideal if your leave is measured in days, not weeks.

The one-week trekker

Six or seven walking days on Poon Hill, Ghandruk, Mardi Himal or short Annapurna Base Camp. This is the real thing: teahouse nights, dal bhat, a proper summit-of-the-trek sunrise, and legs that earned the view. The sweet spot for most Gulf professionals with a week to spend.

Practical tips for trekkers coming from the Gulf

Pack for cold you never feel at home

Gulf life is warm; the mountains are not. Above 3,000 m nights drop below freezing even in season. Layer up — a warm down jacket is essential, and you can rent one cheaply in Kathmandu or Pokhara rather than buying.

Carry US dollars for the visa

The airport visa desk wants cash, and US dollars are simplest. Bring the exact fee for your stay length; keep some smaller notes for tips and teahouse extras where cards don’t reach.

Respect the altitude

Coming from sea level, ascend slowly and hydrate. A guided, paced itinerary is your safety net — our guides watch for the early signs so a small headache never becomes a serious problem.

Give the flights a buffer day

Domestic mountain flights and weather can shift. Keep a spare day before your DXB/DOH departure so a delay in the hills never costs you your international flight home.

FAQ: trekking Nepal from the UAE & Gulf

How long is the flight from Dubai to Kathmandu?

About 4 hours 15 minutes non-stop, most often on flydubai, with Himalaya Airlines and Nepal Airlines also flying the route. From Doha it’s roughly 4h 20m on Qatar Airways, from Sharjah about 4 hours on Air Arabia, and from Abu Dhabi around 4h 40m on Etihad.

Do I need a visa for Nepal if I live in the UAE?

Most nationalities get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport — US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days, US$125 for 90 days, paid in cash. Indian citizens need no visa at all. A short list of nationalities must apply in advance instead.

Can I really trek Nepal in a one-week holiday?

Yes. A Ghorepani Poon Hill, Ghandruk, Mardi Himal or short Annapurna Base Camp trek fits comfortably inside a 7–9 day trip once you add the four-hour flights each way. You will not reach Everest Base Camp on foot in a week, but you will stand under 6,000–8,000 m peaks.

Is it too cold coming from the Gulf heat?

At trekking altitude it is genuinely cold, especially at night, so layering matters. But on the lower treks in October–November and March–April the days are mild and sunny — t-shirt walking, down jacket at the viewpoints.

When is the best time for Gulf residents to go?

October–November and March–April give the clearest mountains. Avoid June–August — that is the Gulf summer break but also Nepal’s monsoon; if you must travel then, head to rain-shadow Upper Mustang, which stays dry.

What does a guided short trek cost from the UAE?

From about US$255 (AED ~940) per person for a guided Poon Hill trek, land-only. Add roughly AED 1,300–2,500 for return flights and around AED 110 for a 15-day visa. Longer or higher treks cost more — see the price table above.

Is there a time difference between Nepal and the Gulf?

Nepal runs on UTC+5:45, so it is 1 hour 45 minutes ahead of the UAE and 2 hours 45 minutes ahead of Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. There is effectively no jet lag.

Are the Everest helicopter day tours worth it?

If your leave is measured in days rather than weeks, yes. A helicopter tour puts you beside Everest with a landing and breakfast stop, and has you back in Kathmandu the same morning — no altitude commitment, no trekking fitness required.
