Beyond the trek: the wild side of Nepal that most visitors miss
Rhinos, tigers and elephants in steamy jungle, an hour's flight from the snow peaks. Nepal isn't only mountains — and the lowland national parks are the perfect add-on to any trek.

Say "Nepal" and most people picture snow peaks. But drop south from the Himalaya to the steamy lowland jungles of the Terai and you find a completely different country: one of one-horned rhinos, Bengal tigers, wild elephants and crocodile-filled rivers. Nepal is not only mountains, and pairing a trek with a jungle safari gives you the full sweep of the country in a single trip.
Nepal's wild lowlands
- Chitwan National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage site, famous for rhinos
- Home to the endangered greater one-horned rhino and Bengal tiger
- Bardia National Park — wilder and quieter, Nepal's best tiger country
- An easy add-on to any Himalayan trek
Mountains and jungle in one trip
The contrast is the magic. One week you are above the treeline gazing at 8,000m giants; the next you are gliding through tall grassland at dawn watching a rhino graze. Chitwan, in the central Terai, is the classic choice — accessible, rich in wildlife, and steeped in Tharu culture. Bardia, in the far west, is wilder and the better bet for tigers. Both offer jeep and canoe safaris, birdlife by the hundred, and a warm, green change of pace after the cold heights. It is the easiest way to see two completely different Nepals.
| Park | Best for | Vibe |
|---|---|---|
| Chitwan | Rhinos, easy access | Classic, popular |
| Bardia | Tigers, wilderness | Remote, quiet |
