From the world's flattest country to its highest mountains: a Dane's case for Nepal

Denmark's highest point is about 171 metres. Nepal's is 8,849. For Danes craving real altitude, a Himalayan trek is the ultimate antidote to the flatlands — and it's more reachable than you think.

There is a particular hunger for mountains that comes from living somewhere very flat. Denmark's highest natural point, Møllehøj, reaches a grand 171 metres — gentler than many city office towers. So it is no surprise that Danes, among the world's most enthusiastic travellers, are increasingly pointing their wanderlust at the opposite extreme: the Nepal Himalaya, home to the highest ground on the planet.

Flat to sky-high

  • Denmark's highest point: ~171m (Møllehøj)
  • Nepal's highest point: 8,849m (Everest)
  • Nepal has 8 of the 10 tallest mountains on Earth
  • Copenhagen → Kathmandu: one stop (via Istanbul, Dubai or Doha)

The ultimate antidote to the flatlands

For a Dane, the appeal is visceral. Even the gentlest Nepali trek climbs higher than anything in Denmark within the first morning. By the time you reach a viewpoint like Poon Hill (3,210m) you are nearly twenty times higher than Møllehøj, with a wall of snow peaks where the horizon should be. It is the kind of landscape that recalibrates what you thought a country could look like.

It suits the Danish way of travelling

Nepal fits the Danish temperament better than you might expect. Teahouse trekking is unhurried and social — a kind of mountain hygge, with warm lodges, shared dal bhat dinners and early nights. It is exceptional value (a strong krone goes a very long way), and it is the perfect escape from the long, dark, flat Danish winter: come in autumn (October–November) or spring for clear skies and crisp mountain air. Getting there is easy — Copenhagen connects to Kathmandu with a single stop via Istanbul or the Gulf.

What this means for you

If the flatlands have you dreaming of altitude, Nepal is the cure. Begin gently with Poon Hill or Annapurna Base Camp, or commit to Everest Base Camp — all walkable for a reasonably fit traveller, no climbing experience required. Tell us your dates and we will build the trek, the guide and the permits around your trip from Denmark.
