Nepal Is Getting Its First Ritz-Carlton. Here's the Kathmandu Luxury Hotel Boom, by the Numbers

Seven years ago, Marriott did not have a single hotel in Nepal. Today it operates five in Kathmandu alone and has signed agreements for at least four more — including the country's first Ritz-Carlton, its first Westin, and, opening within months, the first Luxury Collection hotel anywhere in South Asia. If you have been to Kathmandu recently and wondered why cranes are suddenly going up over Thamel, this is why.

On 15 June 2026, Marriott International and CG Hospitality Global — the hospitality arm of the Chaudhary Group, Nepal's largest conglomerate — signed a multi-property agreement bringing The Ritz-Carlton Kathmandu and The Westin Kathmandu to the capital, roughly 300 rooms and suites between them, targeted to open by 2031. Marriott's Asia Pacific president Rajeev Menon called it a way to ‘bring world-class hospitality experiences to these high-potential markets,’ while CG Hospitality's Rahul Chaudhary framed it as a new chapter for the region's hospitality landscape.

The Luxury Collection property has the longer, stranger backstory. Ground was broken in 2014 for what was originally meant to be a Sheraton; construction delays ran long enough that the branding agreement lapsed entirely. Developer MIT Group Holdings, led by Shesh Ghale and Jamuna Ghale Gurung, kept building anyway, and the 17-storey tower — now costed at roughly NPR 15 billion, or around $106 million — is on track to open under the Luxury Collection flag instead, complete with a 2,000-guest banquet hall, spa, infinity pool and multiple restaurants. Marriott International's global chairman, David Marriott, made his first visit to Nepal for the occasion on 7 June 2026, telling local press that Nepal is ‘emerging as a promising destination for luxury hospitality.’

What this means for trekkers

Almost none of this changes what happens on the trail — it changes what happens on either side of it. The overwhelming majority of Nepal's 1.16 million annual arrivals still book budget-to-midrange rooms for their Kathmandu nights, and that is not about to flip because a Ritz-Carlton opens in Thamel. What it does signal is a market: global chains do not commit hundreds of millions of dollars to a country on a hunch, and Marriott's five-hotels-and-counting bet is a vote that Nepal's city-side tourism — honeymooners, conference delegates, and trekkers bookending a trip with a comfortable night before or after the mountains — is only getting bigger.

None of these three towers change the maths of an Everest Base Camp or Annapurna itinerary, and none of them are open yet — the earliest, the Luxury Collection Kathmandu, is still targeting a 2026 opening that has already slipped once. But they are a real signal of where Nepal's tourism economy is pointed as it closes in on the long-promised 1.5-million-visitor year: fewer backpacker guesthouses being the story, more five-star towers being built to bet on it.
