There are 14 mountains on Earth taller than 8,000 metres, and completing all of them is one of mountaineering's defining feats — fewer than 50 people had done it by the early 2010s. On October 9, 2024, two climbers who had never planned their expeditions around each other reached the same summit, Shishapangma (8,027m), within about two hours of each other, and each became the youngest person of their gender ever to finish all 14.

Neither climb was a coordinated stunt. Shishapangma's autumn window is narrow and Chinese permits restrict when foreign teams can attempt it, so most 14-peakers chasing their final summit converge on the same short stretch of clear weather — which is exactly what put two record-setters on the same slope on the same morning.

Nima Rinji Sherpa grew up in the Khumbu, in a Sherpa climbing family — his uncle, Mingma Gyabu 'G' Sherpa, held the previous youngest-ever record, completing all 14 at age 30 in 2019. Nima broke his own uncle's family record by more than a decade, climbing with expedition partner Pasang Nurbu Sherpa on the final push. Nepal's Department of Tourism and the Nepal Mountaineering Association confirmed the climb on the day; Guinness World Records has since credited him with seven separate mountaineering records tied to the achievement.

Brownlee, raised in London with dual British-Spanish nationality, had already set her own youngest-woman-on-K2 mark in 2022 before closing out the full set on Shishapangma two years later — becoming both the youngest woman on record to complete all 14 eight-thousanders and the first British woman to do it at all.

What this means for trekkers

Nine of the 14 eight-thousanders sit inside Nepal, and both climbers' journeys ran straight through terrain our own trekkers walk every season — Everest, Manaslu, Kanchenjunga, the approach valleys below Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. You don't need a Guinness record to stand under any of these peaks; the Manaslu Circuit and Kanchenjunga Base Camp treks put you at the foot of two of the mountains on Nima and Adriana's list, on a schedule built for acclimatisation rather than speed.

What makes the coincidence land is less the shared date and more the shared discipline behind it: two climbers, a decade apart in age, running on separate but parallel clocks toward the same finish line, managing altitude, weather windows and permits across four continents' worth of mountains for years, only for both clocks to strike the same morning.
