Done the fjords? Why Norwegian hikers are heading to Nepal next

Norwegians grow up in the mountains — but nothing at home compares to walking beneath a wall of 8,000-metre giants. Here's why Nepal is the natural next step for the friluftsliv soul.

No nation takes its mountains more seriously than Norway. Friluftsliv — the love of open-air life — is practically a national religion, and Norwegians log more hut-to-hut miles than almost anyone. Which is exactly why so many of them, having walked their own fjords and fells, set their sights on Nepal: the one place on earth where the mountains dwarf even Norway's grandest.

Why Norwegians come

  • Norway's highest peak, Galdhøpiggen, is 2,469m
  • Nepal has 8 of the 10 highest mountains on Earth (all above 8,000m)
  • Teahouse trekking is hut-to-hut — the format Norwegians already love
  • Oslo → Kathmandu: one stop via Istanbul or the Gulf

Mountains beyond anything at home

Galdhøpiggen, the roof of Norway and of Northern Europe, stands 2,469 metres. On a Nepal trek you walk past teahouses higher than that — and gaze up at peaks more than three times its height. For a hiker raised on Jotunheimen and the Lofoten ridgelines, the Himalaya is not a different hike so much as a different planet: the same joy of moving through big country, scaled up beyond imagination.

Familiar in spirit, bigger in every way

The format will feel like home: walk all day, arrive at a warm lodge, eat well, sleep, repeat — Nepal's teahouse network is the Himalayan cousin of Norway's beloved DNT huts. The differences are the altitude, the Buddhist and Sherpa culture along the trail, and the value: a trek in Nepal costs a fraction of an equivalent week in famously expensive Norway. Autumn brings the clearest skies, a welcome swap for a grey Scandinavian shoulder season.

What this means for you

If you have the friluftsliv itch and have ticked off Norway's classics, Nepal is your next great walk. The Annapurna Circuit and Manaslu Circuit are the long, wild, hut-to-hut loops that suit experienced Norwegian hikers best; Everest Base Camp is the icon. We arrange the guide, permits and logistics around your trip from Oslo — you bring the legs you have been training on the fjells.
