The World's Best Luxury Hotel for 2026 Isn't in Paris or Dubai — It's a 29-Room Retreat in Nepal's Mustang Desert

On 27 July 2026, the American luxury title Robb Report named the single best luxury hotel on Earth — and for the first time, it wasn't a palace in Paris, a private island in the Maldives, or a members-only retreat in Dubai. It was a 29-room lodge built into the cliffs of a rain-shadow desert valley in Nepal that foreign visitors weren't even allowed to enter until 1992.

The ranking comes from Robb Report's panel of 24 'Travel Masters' — working luxury travel advisors who between them have stayed in nearly every five-star property on the planet. Shinta Mani Mustang topped their 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth 2026 list outright, ahead of storied competition in nine other countries. It's the property's third major recognition in three years: Robb Report's 'Best of the Best' and 50 Best Luxury Hotels lists in 2024, Best Luxury Adventure Hotel in 2025, and now the top spot overall. We've watched this same valley for years as trekking guides — long before five-star reviewers found it.

Mustang is the driest, starkest landscape in Nepal — a wind-carved desert of red cliffs and eroded pillars squeezed into the Kali Gandaki, often cited as the world's deepest gorge, between the 8,000m walls of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri. It sat almost entirely closed to outsiders until 1992, and its walled former capital, Lo Manthang, still limits visitor numbers today. Bensley — the architect behind some of Asia's most photographed resorts — designed each of the 29 rooms like a traditional Tibetan homestead: hand-painted beams, upcycled furnishings, and Buddhist textile work sourced from local artisans rather than shipped in. Guests ride horses along the old salt-trade trails, take archery lessons, visit the 800-year-old Bon Buddhist village of Lubra, and can consult a resident Amchi — a practitioner of traditional Tibetan medicine — on-site. None of it is cheap: rates start above $2,000 per couple per night with a five-night minimum, though that includes all food, guided activities and Kathmandu–Jomsom transfers.

What this means for trekkers

The award also matters beyond one hotel's balance sheet. Nepal's tourism economy has leaned almost entirely on backpackers and budget trekkers for decades; a global No. 1 luxury ranking is a signal to a very different traveller — the kind who books private guides and five-night minimums — that the Himalaya now competes at the very top of the market, not just the adventure-budget end of it. Sherpa Hospitality Group CEO Namgyal Sherpa called the win bigger than one hotel, framing it as proof Nepal has 'emerged' as a serious luxury destination. Mustang's restricted-area permit rules — recently simplified from a flat $500 fee to $50 a day — mean it's also never been more practical to go and see the valley for yourself, whichever way you choose to sleep in it. If a two-week trek is more than you want to commit to, the shorter Jomsom–Muktinath trek follows the same Kali Gandaki corridor in a week.
