The short Annapurna Base Camp trek: reach the Sanctuary in 4–5 days
Short on time? You don't need two weeks for Annapurna Base Camp. With a drive-in start and a smart route, you can stand in the Sanctuary in as few as 4–5 days. Here's how — and the one caution that matters.

"How few days do I need for Annapurna Base Camp?" is one of the most common questions we get — and the answer surprises people. While the classic trek runs 7 to 11 days, a smart drive-in route can put you in the Annapurna Sanctuary, beneath an 8,000-metre wall of peaks, in as little as 4 to 5 days. For time-poor travellers, it is the fastest way into the high Himalaya that still feels like a real trek.
Key facts
- Annapurna Base Camp sits at 4,130m
- A short route reaches it in about 4–5 days
- Starts with a drive-in from Pokhara (no flight needed)
- Acclimatisation matters on the faster ascent
How the short route works
The time saver is the road. Instead of walking the lower foothills for days, you drive from Pokhara to a high trailhead such as Siwai or Kyumi, jump on the trail near Chhomrong, and climb steadily through bamboo forest to Deurali, Machhapuchhre Base Camp and finally Annapurna Base Camp. A typical short itinerary walks up in two-and-a-bit days and back in two, with the Sanctuary as the glorious turning point.
| Day | Route |
|---|---|
| 1 | Drive Pokhara → trailhead, trek to Chhomrong / Sinuwa |
| 2 | Trek to Deurali |
| 3 | To MBC & Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) |
| 4 | Descend to Bamboo / Jhinu (hot springs) |
| 5 | Trek out, drive back to Pokhara |
The one caution
Speed has a trade-off: less time to acclimatise. Climbing from Pokhara's ~800m to 4,130m in two to three days is faster than ideal, so the short route suits fit, healthy trekkers, and everyone should walk it sensibly — hydrate, pace the final climb, and tell your guide immediately about any headache or nausea. A good guide manages this carefully; it is exactly why we do not recommend rushing it solo.
What this means for you
If you only have a few days but refuse to miss the Himalaya, the short Annapurna Base Camp trek is the answer — a genuine high-mountain experience inside a long weekend extended by a day or two. We run it as a guided 4–5 day trip with the drive-in start, sensible acclimatisation and the Jhinu hot springs on the way down.
