Solo female trekking in Nepal: how safe is it really?

Thousands of women trek Nepal on their own every year. With the 2023 guide rule and a famously warm culture, here's an honest look at safety — and how to do it right in 2026.

It is the question we are asked more than almost any other: is it safe for a woman to trek Nepal alone? The honest answer is yes — with the right preparation. Nepal is one of the more welcoming countries in Asia for solo female travellers, the trails are busy and social, and a 2023 rule means you will have a licensed guide alongside you on the main routes. Here is the real picture.

The honest picture

  • Since 2023, solo foreign trekkers must hire a licensed guide in Nepal's national parks
  • Popular trails (Everest, Annapurna) are busy and sociable — you are rarely truly alone
  • Female guides and porters can be requested
  • Nepali culture is famously hospitable toward guests

Why so many women trek here alone

The 2023 guide requirement, controversial with some independent trekkers, has been a quiet win for solo women: you always have a knowledgeable local with you, someone who knows the trail, the teahouses and the language. Beyond that, the main routes are some of the most travelled footpaths in the Himalaya — you will meet other trekkers at every lodge, share dal bhat with strangers who become friends, and rarely walk out of sight of someone. Common-sense travel rules apply, as anywhere, but violent crime against trekkers is very rare.

What this means for you

Solo does not have to mean unsupported. We pair solo female trekkers with vetted, licensed guides (female guides on request), on routes chosen for safety and good company — Annapurna Base Camp, Poon Hill and Langtang are ideal first solo treks. Come on your own; you will not feel alone.
