Trekking Nepal over 60: why it's far more achievable than you think

You don't need to be young to walk in the Himalaya. With the right route and the right pace, trekkers in their 60s and 70s reach incredible places in Nepal every season. Here's how.

One of the most persistent myths about Nepal is that trekking here is only for the young and super-fit. It is not. Every season, trekkers in their 60s and 70s walk to Poon Hill, into the Annapurna Sanctuary, and up the Everest trail — and come home glowing. The secret is not youth; it is choosing the right route and letting the pace work for you.

Why age is no barrier

  • Many treks are moderate, with short daily distances and teahouse comfort
  • The slow, acclimatisation-friendly pace actually suits older trekkers
  • Porters and guides carry the loads and watch your health
  • Routes can be chosen for lower altitude and gentler days

The right treks, the right pace

The trick is matching the trek to you. Poon Hill is a gentle, lower-altitude classic with some of the best sunrise views in Nepal. The Everest View trek delivers the big mountain without the highest, hardest days. Annapurna Base Camp is a step up but very achievable with time. On all of them, a relaxed schedule with built-in rest days is your friend, not a weakness — going slowly is exactly how the body handles altitude best. With a porter carrying your pack and a guide setting a sensible pace, the mountains open up at any age.
